TL;DR: Generation of 3.8-fs pulses with energies of up to 15 microJ from a supercontinuum produced in two cascaded hollow fibers is demonstrated through a closed-loop combination of a spatial light modulator for adaptive pulse compression and spectral-phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) measurements as feedback signal.
Abstract: We demonstrate generation of 3.8-fs pulses with energies of up to 15 μJ from a supercontinuum produced in two cascaded hollow fibers. Ultrabroadband dispersion compensation was achieved through a closed-loop combination of a spatial light modulator for adaptive pulse compression and spectral-phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) measurements as feedback signal.

TL;DR: Comparison with theory indicates that an observed twofold increase of spectral broadening can be assigned to the dispersion of n(2) as well as first order- rather than second-order dispersion effects.
Abstract: We measure the transmission of ps-pulses through silicon-on-insulator submicron waveguides for excitation wavelengths between 1400 and 1650 nm and peak powers covering four orders of magnitude. Self-phase-modulation induced spectral broadening is found to be significant at coupled peak powers of even a few tens of mW. The nonlinear-index coefficient, extracted from the experimental data, is estimated as n(2) ~ 5*10(-18) m(2)/W at 1500 nm. The experimental results show good agreement with model calculations that take into account nonlinear phase shift, first- and second order dispersion, mode confinement, frequency dispersion of n(2), and dynamics of two-photon-absorption-generated free carriers. Comparison with theory indicates that an observed twofold increase of spectral broadening between 1400 and 1650 nm can be assigned to the dispersion of n(2) as well as first order- rather than second-order dispersion effects. The analysis of pulse broadening, spectral shift and transmission saturation allows estimating a power threshold for nonlinearity-induced signal impairment in nanophotonic devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, the nonlinear propagation of femtosecond pulses in photonic-crystal fibers is investigated theoretically without the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation, and it is shown that phase matching of degenerate four-wave mixing can be achieved in an extremely broad frequency range from the IR to the UV.
Abstract: The nonlinear propagation of femtosecond pulses in photonic-crystal fibers is investigated theoretically without the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation. Low-intensity supercontinuum generation caused by fission of higher-order solitons into red-shifted fundamental solitons and blue-shifted nonsolitonic radiation is studied in a large range of fiber and pulse parameters. It is shown that phase matching of degenerate four-wave mixing can be achieved in an extremely broad frequency range from the IR to the UV. Spontaneous generation of new frequency components and parametric amplification by four-wave mixing as well as its possible overlap with soliton fission are studied in detail.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the nonlinear dynamics of femtosecond pulses undergoing self-focusing in a normally dispersive medium and observe that the pulse splits into two pulses, and measurements of the pulse spectra provide evidence that supercontinuum generation is closely connected with the temporal splitting.
Abstract: We investigate experimentally the nonlinear dynamics of a femtosecond pulse undergoing self-focusing in a normally dispersive medium. Above a certain threshold power, we observe that the pulse splits into two pulses, and measurements of the pulse spectra provide evidence that supercontinuum generation is closely connected with the temporal splitting. We also observe that the split pulses can undergo additional splittings. Our observations are in good agreement with the predictions of the theoretical model based on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation describing self-focusing in dispersive media.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate a simple, yet effective, method for the direct generation of mid-infrared optical frequency combs in the region from 2.5 to 4.0μm from a conventional and compact erbium-fibre-based femtosecond laser in the telecommunication band.
Abstract: Mid-infrared optical frequency combs are of significant interest for molecular spectroscopy due to the large absorption of molecular vibrational modes on the one hand, and the ability to implement superior comb-based spectroscopic modalities with increased speed, sensitivity and precision on the other hand. Here, we demonstrate a simple, yet effective, method for the direct generation of mid-infrared optical frequency combs in the region from 2.5 to 4.0 μm (that is, 2,500–4,000 cm−1), covering a large fraction of the functional group region, from a conventional and compact erbium-fibre-based femtosecond laser in the telecommunication band (that is, 1.55 μm). The wavelength conversion is based on dispersive wave generation within the supercontinuum process in an unprecedented large-cross-section silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide with the dispersion lithographically engineered. The long-wavelength dispersive wave can perform as a mid-infrared frequency comb, whose coherence is demonstrated via optical heterodyne measurements. Such an approach can be considered as an alternative option to mid-infrared frequency comb generation. Moreover, it has the potential to realize compact dual-comb spectrometers. The generated combs also have a fine teeth-spacing, making them suitable for gas-phase analysis. The direct generation of mid-infrared optical frequency combs in the region 2.5–4.0 μm from a 1.55-μm conventional and compact erbium-fibre-based femtosecond laser is demonstrated via coherent dispersive wave generation in silicon nitride nanophotonic waveguides.
