Abstract: In this work we show an optical fiber evanescent wave absorption probe for glucose detection in different physiological media. High selectivity is achieved by functionalizing the surface of an only-core poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer optical fiber with phenilboronic groups, and enhanced sensitivity by using a U-shaped geometry. Employing a supercontinuum light source and a high-resolution spectrometer, absorption measurements are performed in the broadband visible light spectrum. Experimental results suggest the feasibility of such a fiber probe as a low-cost and selective glucose detector.

Abstract: Femtosecond fiber lasers together with nonlinear fibers are compact, reliable, all-fiber supercontinuum sources. Maintaining an all-fiber configuration, however, necessitates pulse compression in an optical fiber, which can lead to nonlinearities for subhundred femtosecond, nanojoule pulses. In this work we show that using large-mode-area fibers for pulse compression mitigates the nonlinearity, resulting in compressed pulses with significantly reduced satellite pulses. Consequently, supercontinua generated with these pulses are shown to have as much as a 10 dB increase in coherence fringe contrast. By using a hybrid highly nonlinear fiber-photonic crystal fiber, the continuum can be extended to visible wavelengths while still maintaining high coherence.

Abstract: The mechanism of supercontinuum generation and the spatial distribution of its sources during the propagation of a high-power femtosecond laser pulse in liquids and gases are studied. The numerical simulation shows that the supercontinuum is generated due to self-phase modulation of the laser pulse in space and time in the presence of nonlinearity and wave effects. Supercontinuum sources are found to be located mainly in the ring structure of the laser pulse at the intensity minima. It is established that the efficiency of generation of the short-wavelength part of the supercontinuum during the propagation of the focused laser beam depends on the initial phase modulation and achieves a maximum when the compression length slightly exceeds the length of nonlinear focusing.

Abstract: We demonstrate that the fission of higher-order N-solitons with a subsequent ejection of fundamental quasi-solitons creates cavities formed by a pair of solitary waves with dispersive light trapped between them. As a result of multiple reflections of the trapped light from the bounding solitons which act as mirrors, they bend their trajectories and collide. In the spectral domain, the two solitons receive blue and red wavelength shifts, and the spectrum of the trapped light alters as well. This phenomenon strongly affects spectral characteristics of the generated supercontinuum. Consideration of the system's parameters which affect the creation of the cavity reveals possibilities of predicting and controlling soliton-soliton collisions induced by multiple reflections of the trapped light.

Abstract: We examine the noise properties of supercontinuum light sources when used in low-coherence interferometry applications. The first application is a multiple-scattering low-coherence interferometry (ms2/LCI) system, where high power and long image acquisition times are required to image deep into tissue. For this system, we compare the noise characteristics of two supercontinuum sources from different suppliers. Both sources have long-term drift that limits the amount of time over which signal averaging is advantageous for reducing noise. The second application is a high-resolution optical coherence tomography system, where broadband light is needed for high axial resolution. For this system, we compare the noise performance of the two supercontinuum sources and a light source based on four superluminescent diodes (SLD) using imaging contrast as a comparative metric. We find that the NKT SuperK has superior noise performance compared with the Fianium SC-450-4, but neither meets the performance of the SLD.
