Abstract: This paper studies the control of a class of discrete event processes, i.e. processes that are discrete, asynchronous and possibly nondeter-ministic. The controlled process is described as the generator of a formal language, while the controller, or supervisor, is constructed from the grammar of a specified target language that incorporates the desired closed-loop system behavior. The existence problem for a supervisor is reduced to finding the largest controllable language contained in a given legal language. Two examples are provided.

Abstract: This paper describes a simple "high-level" controller called a "supervisor" which is capable of switching into feedback with a SISO process, a sequence of linear positioning or set-point controllers from a family of candidate controllers so as to cause the output of the process to approach and track a constant reference input. The process is assumed to be modeled by a SISO linear system whose transfer function is in the union of a number of subclasses, each subclass being small enough so that one of the candidate controllers would solve the positioning problem if the transfer function of the process were to be one of the subclasses' members. Each subclass contains a "nominal process model transfer function" about which the subclass is centred. It is shown that in the absence of unmodeled process dynamics, the proposed supervisor can successfully perform its function even if process disturbances are present, provided they are bounded and constant.

Abstract: The observability of discrete-event systems is investigated. A discrete-event system G is modeled as the controlled generator of a formal language L m ( G ) in the framework of Ramadge and Wonham. To control G, a supervisor S is developed whose action is to enable and disable the controllable events of G according to a record of occurrences of the observable events of G, in such a way that the resulting closed-loop system obeys some prespecified operating rules embodied in a given language K. A necessary and sufficient condition is found for the existence of a supervisor S such that L m ( S/G ) = K . Based on this condition, a solution of the supervisory control and observation problem (SCOP) is obtained. Two examples are provided.

Abstract: Considering the variations of inertia in real applications, an adaptive control scheme for the permanent-magnet synchronous motor speed-regulation system is proposed in this paper. First, a composite control method, i.e., the extended-state-observer (ESO)-based control method, is employed to ensure the performance of the closed-loop system. The ESO can estimate both the states and the disturbances simultaneously so that the composite speed controller can have a corresponding part to compensate for the disturbances. Then, considering the case of variations of load inertia, an adaptive control scheme is developed by analyzing the control performance relationship between the feedforward compensation gain and the system inertia. By using inertia identification techniques, a fuzzy-inferencer-based supervisor is designed to automatically tune the feedforward compensation gain according to the identified inertia. Simulation and experimental results both show that the proposed method achieves a better speed response in the presence of inertia variations.
