Abstract: This study explores how innovations surrounding supply chain communication systems (SCCS) affect channel relationships and market performance. Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm, the study hypothesizes that certain SCCS innovations can be viewed as firm resources that enhance channel capabilities, which in turn affect a firm’s market performance. The empirical research is based on 184 responses from a survey with U.S. supply chain and logistics managers using structural equation modeling as the analytic method. The results suggest that the effect of applied technological SCCS innovations on channel capabilities is mediated by interfirm systems integration. In contrast, administrative SCCS innovations enhance information exchange and coordination activities directly. Furthermore, the influence of applied technological innovations for SCCS is not strong enough to affect either responsiveness of the partnership or firm performance, whereas administrative innovations for SCCS affect both.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors test the 21st Century Logistics framework by examining the managerial relationships it describes and the degree to which it makes clear the link between improving logistical processes and operating performance improvements.
Abstract: This study tests the 21st Century Logistics framework by examining the managerial relationships it describes and the degree to which it makes clear the link between improving logistical processes and operating performance improvements. It uses as a framework the six logistics competencies to determine their relative importance and their overall contribution to improved logistics and, by extension, improved operating performance. The primary goal of supply chain improvements is to lower costs and improve customer satisfaction. The most significant of the six areas of competency for achieving these goals are customer integration (creating lasting loyalty with prime customers) and internal integration (seamless linking of internal actions with customer needs). Managers should identify the requirements of their most important customers and work to satisfy those needs in order to get the most out of investments and efforts on supply chain integration. More research is indicated in the areas of the financial rewards of superior performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a detailed review of mathematical programming models developed for BSC and identify key challenges and potential future work, as well as detailed analysis of the BSC modeling and design.
Abstract: Biofuels are identified as the potential solution for depleting fossil fuel reserves, increasing oil prices, and providing a clean, renewable energy source The major barrier preventing the commercialization of lignocellulosic biorefineries is the complex conversion process and their respective supply chain Efficient supply chain management of a lignocellulosic biomass is crucial for success of second generation biofuels This paper systematically describes energy needs, energy targets, biofuel feedstocks, conversion processes, and finally provides a comprehensive review of Biomass Supply Chain (BSC) design and modeling Specifically, the paper presents a detailed review of mathematical programming models developed for BSC and identifies key challenges and potential future work This review will provide readers with a starting point for understanding biomass feedstocks and biofuel production as well as detailed analysis of the BSC modeling and design

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the ways in which local government authorities in England use their procurement function to foster sustainable development and highlight the importance of supporting factors, like transparency, organisational culture and strategy as well as leeway in public policy, for sustainable supply chain management in the public sector.
Abstract: Purpose: While the contribution of supply chain management to sustainability is receiving increasing attention in the private sector, there is still a scarcity of parallel studies of public procurement. Hence the purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which local government authorities in England use their procurement function to foster sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses an exploratory approach. Based on a review of the existing literature, qualitative research into leading local government authorities is undertaken to draw out the multiple ways in which public procurement can support sustainable development. Findings: At an aggregate level, local government procurers have adopted a wide range of initiatives to address all three aspects of sustainability. These are condensed into a typology of sustainable supply chain management for the public sector. Research limitations/implications: The study highlights the importance of supporting factors, like transparency, organisational culture and strategy as well as leeway in public policy, for sustainable supply chain management in the public sector. Practical implications: The experience of the best practice local authorities deserves wider recognition among practitioners, policy makers and academic researchers, not least given the objective of the UK government to be among the leaders in the European Union on sustainable procurement by 2009. Originality/value: The proposed typology of sustainable supply chain management for the public sector can serve as a basis for future research in this area.
