TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess current developments in the theory and practice of supply management and through such an assessment to identify barriers, possibilities and key trends, they conclude that supply management is, at best, still emergent in terms of both theory and practices.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically assess current developments in the theory and practice of supply management and through such an assessment to identify barriers, possibilities and key trends.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a three‐year detailed study of six supply chains which encompassed 72 companies in Europe. The focal firms in each instance were sophisticated, blue‐chip corporations operating on an international scale. Managers across at least four echelons of the supply chain were interviewed and the supply chains were traced and observed.Findings – The paper reveals that supply management is, at best, still emergent in terms of both theory and practice. Few practitioners were able – or even seriously aspired – to extend their reach across the supply chain in the manner prescribed in much modern theory. The paper identifies the range of key barriers and enablers to supply management and it concludes with an assessment of the main trends.Research limitations/imp...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A comprehensive literature review of published material relating to engineer-to-order supply chains is presented in this paper, which contributes to the development of a more robust definition of ETO supply chain, helps to identify strategies that are suitable and investigates the relationship of the ETO sector with lean and agile approaches.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of logistics capabilities in achieving supply chain agility through a multi-disciplinary review of the relevant research, which aims to provide the basis for formulating a conceptual framework of the relationship.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of logistics capabilities in achieving supply chain agility through a multi‐disciplinary review of the relevant research. The systematic literature review aims to provide the basis for formulating a conceptual framework of the relationship.Design/methodology/approach – A systematic, comprehensive review of the literature on manufacturing, organizational and supply chain agility from 1991 through 2010 was conducted. The literature on logistics capabilities was also examined to identify the various elements that contribute to supply chain agility.Findings – Supply chain agility has primarily been explored in the literature through a focus on manufacturing flexibility, supply chain speed, or lean manufacturing. The role of logistics capabilities in achieving supply chain agility has not been addressed from a holistic conceptual perspective. This research addresses that gap using a multi‐disciplinary approach. As such, it is the first phase in theory ...

TL;DR: In this paper, a structural model of natural resource based green supply chain management (GSCM) and its relationship, with an indication of cause and effect, to relevant performance measures and drivers is conceptualized.
Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is to conceptualise a structural model of natural resource based green supply chain management (GSCM), and its relationship, with an indication of cause and effect, to relevant performance measures and drivers.Design/methodology/approach – The literature, describing GSCM from a natural resource based view (NRBV), along with performance measures and institutional drivers, is critically evaluated and used to develop the model.Findings – Constructs are identified in terms of intra‐ and inter‐organisational environmental practices, performance measures and institutional drivers. Causal relationships, within and between the constructs, are also proposed in the form of hypotheses.Research limitations/implications – At this stage the model is purely conceptual and the causal relationships are only proposed. Empirical tests of the model and hypotheses are required.Practical implications – On empirical verification, this work can furnish managers with validated measurement scales to...
