Abstract: An international supply chain is conceptualized as a complex, dynamic system in which disruptions interact with long shipping and lead times to generate costs. Findings from a case study and simulation model indicate that demand-related disruptions created substantial and unexpected costs in terms of expedited shipping, high inventories, and lower demand fulfillment. Production-related disruptions declined over time, but demand-related disruptions did not. Implications for management are discussed.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this article is to empirically test the impact of supply‐chain management (SCM) capabilities on business performance so as to determine to what degree customer‐oriented SCM issues influence competitive position and organizational performance.Design/methodology/approach – A rigorous methodology is employed to generate a reliable and valid measurement instrument. Responses from 474 manufacturing managers are then utilized to test a causal model using LISREL®.Findings – The results indicate significant positive relationships exist among three types of SCM capabilities (outside‐in, inside‐out, and spanning) and business performance (perceived customer value, customer loyalty, market performance, and financial performance).Practical implications – The article demonstrates that strategically developing SCM capabilities such as efficient inbound and outbound transportation, warehousing, and inventory control, production support, packaging, purchasing, order processing, and information di...

Abstract: In this paper, we develop an integrated framework for the modeling of reverse supply chain management of electronic waste, which includes recycling. We describe the behavior of the various decision-makers, consisting of the sources of electronic waste, the recyclers, the processors, as well as the consumers associated with the demand markets for the distinct products. We construct the multitiered e-cycling network equilibrium model, establish the variational inequality formulation, whose solution yields the material flows as well as the prices, and provide both qualitative properties of the equilibrium pattern as well as numerical examples that are solved using the proposed algorithm.

Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is that of individualizing a framework for the management of uncertainty in supply chain finalized to reduce the firm risks.Design/methodology/approach – Since a way for reducing the damages deriving from uncertainty sources is increasing the level of flexibility inside the supply chain, and the real option theory allows the increase of the flexibility level, in order to achieve the aim of this work, we utilize the real options theory to coverage of one or more risks inside the supply chain.Findings – A useful theoretical framework has been individualized enabling the selection of possible options to protect the firm against the risk originating from every source of uncertainty. Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore the relationships among supply chain risks (SCRs), supply chain integration (SCI), and company performance in a global context.Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on the High Performance Manufacturing (HPM) project database collected from 317 manufacturing plants in ten countries and three representative industries (machinery, electronics and transportation components), using structural equation modeling (SEM) methods.Findings – Results show that SCRs, especially supply delivery risk (SDR), are negatively related to SCI. There is a contingent relationship between SCI and performance. Different types of SCI play different roles in improving different types of company performance.
