TL;DR: The work of a focus group of environmental and operations management researchers, which generated a broad framework useful for identifying fruitful research opportunities as mentioned in this paper, is structured along two dimensions: level of analysis and process of environmental improvement.

TL;DR: In this paper, the issues for purchasing and supply chain managers in the context of environmentally sound management are investigated, and parallels are drawn between established practice and new imperatives that require innovative solutions from managers.
Abstract: This paper investigates the issues for purchasing and supply chain managers in the context of environmentally-sound management. The discussion begins with an analysis of relevant consumer attitudes, legislation and concepts in environmentally-sound management (life-cycle analysis, waste management, product stewardship, etc.), linking them to supply-chain management practices such as vendor assessment, total quality management, lean supply and collaborative supply strategies. In each case, parallels are drawn between established practice and new imperatives that require innovative solutions from managers. The paper then explores the results of fresh field research with five major UK companies, identifying the different ways in which the challenges introduced above are being faced, and adding some extra perspectives to the debate already covered. The discussion concludes with a projection of common issues and ideas for areas of supply chain management that might profit from better environmentally-sound approaches.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an instrument to measure the extent of collaboration in a supply chain consisting of two members, suppliers and retailers, and a survey of companies in New Zealand was conducted to obtain data to test and evaluate the index.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper proposes an instrument to measure the extent of collaboration in a supply chain consisting of two members, suppliers and retailers.Design/methodology/approach – The proposed model for collaboration incorporates collaborative practices in information sharing, decision synchronisation and incentive alignment. A collaboration index is introduced to measure the level of collaborative practices. A survey of companies in New Zealand was conducted to obtain data to test and evaluate the collaboration index.Findings – The survey results confirmed the reliability and validity of the proposed collaboration index measure for measuring collaboration. The findings also showed that the collaboration index was positively associated with operational performance.Research limitations/implications – Future research could consider larger sample sizes and cover other industry types.Practical implications – Supply chain participants will be able to measure the extent of their collaboration and seek improve...

TL;DR: In this paper, two distinct dimensions to information sharing, connectivity and willingness, are identified and analyzed and two dimensions are found to impact operational performance and to be critical to the development of a real information sharing capability.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how information technology (IT) is used to enhance supply chain performance.Design/methodology/approach – A large‐scale survey and semi‐structured interviews were used to collect industry data.Findings – Two distinct dimensions to information sharing – connectivity and willingness – are identified and analyzed. Both dimensions are found to impact operational performance and to be critical to the development of a real information sharing capability. However, many companies are found to have placed most of their emphasis on connectivity, often overlooking the willingness construct. As a result, information sharing seldom delivers on its promise to enable the creation of the cohesive supply chain team.Research limitations – Despite the extensive data collection, the research represents a snapshot of practice. Replication from a longitudinal perspective would help define how IT is evolving to enable supply chain management.Practical implications – A roadmap...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a process model for supplier development and compared two approaches buying firms use in supplier development: reactive efforts to increase the performance of laggard suppliers and strategic efforts to improve the capabilities of the supply base to enhance the buying firm's long-term competitive advantage.
