TL;DR: Microneedles represent a promising technology to deliver therapeutic compounds into the skin for a range of possible applications and the ratio of microneedle fracture force to skin insertion force was found to be optimal for needles with small tip radius and large wall thickness.

TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis of water-soluble semiconductor nanoparticles and their properties are described and discussed and the properties of the resulting nanocrystals are discussed and characterized.
Abstract: We describe the synthesis of water-soluble semiconductor nanoparticles and discuss and characterize their properties. Hydrophobic CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals with a core size between 2 and 5 nm are embedded in a siloxane shell and functionalized with thiol and/or amine groups. Structural characterization by AFM indicates that the siloxane shell is 1−5 nm thick, yielding final particle sizes of 6−17 nm, depending on the initial CdSe core size. The silica coating does not significantly modify the optical properties of the nanocrystals. Their fluorescence emission is about 32−35 nm fwhm and can be tuned from blue to red with quantum yields up to 18%, mainly determined by the quantum yield of the underlying CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals. Silanized nanocrystals exhibit enhanced photochemical stability over organic fluorophores. They also display high stability in buffers at physiological conditions (>150 mM NaCl). The introduction of functionalized groups onto the siloxane surface would permit the conjugation of ...

TL;DR: In this paper, Li/graphite and Li/petroleum coke cells using a in a 50:50 mixture of propylene carbonate (PC) and ethylene carbonates (EC) electrolyte exhibit irreversible reactions only on the first discharge.
Abstract: Li/graphite and Li/petroleum coke cells using a in a 50:50 mixture of propylene carbonate (PC) and ethylene carbonate (EC) electrolyte exhibit irreversible reactions only on the first discharge. These irreversible reactions are associated with electrolyte decomposition and cause the formation of a passivating film or solid electrolyte interphase on the surface of the carbon. The amount of electrolyte decomposition is proportional to the specific surface area of the carbon electrode. When all the available surface area is coated with the film of decomposition products, further decomposition reactions stop. In subsequent cycles, these cells exhibit excellent reversibility and can be cycled without capacity loss.

TL;DR: Transmission electron microscopy, quantitative energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and electron diffraction established that the crystals comprise at least three different types, found both in whole cells and thin sections, in Pseudomonas stutzeri AG259.
Abstract: One mechanism of silver resistance in microorganisms is accumulation of the metal ions in the cell. Here, we report on the phenomenon of biosynthesis of silver-based single crystals with well-defined compositions and shapes, such as equilateral triangles and hexagons, in Pseudomonas stutzeri AG259. The crystals were up to 200 nm in size and were often located at the cell poles. Transmission electron microscopy, quantitative energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and electron diffraction established that the crystals comprise at least three different types, found both in whole cells and thin sections. These Ag-containing crystals are embedded in the organic matrix of the bacteria. Their possible potential as organic-metal composites in thin film and surface coating technology is discussed.
