TL;DR: In this article, a novel biomass-based carbon material was successfully prepared from black locust by KOH chemical activation in combination with surface modification by heat treatment with ammonia solution for enhancing CO2 adsorption.
Abstract: A novel biomass-based carbon material was successfully prepared from black locust by KOH chemical activation in combination with surface modification by heat treatment with ammonia solution for enhancing CO2 adsorption. The textural and surface characteristics of the prepared activated carbons were analyzed with N2 adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the modified activated carbon possesses a high surface area of 2511 m2/g, a large micropore volume of 1.16 cm3/g, and a high nitrogen content of 7.21 wt %. The adsorption behavior of CO2 onto all activated carbon samples was experimentally evaluated by a volumetric method at three different adsorption temperatures of 0, 25, and 50 °C under atmospheric pressure (1 bar). High CO2 uptakes of 7.19 and 5.05 mmol/g at 0 and 25 °C were achieved for the sample AC-KOH-N due to its well-developed micropore structur...

TL;DR: The roughness as well as the water contact angle increases on the superhydrophobic thin films with further increase in the size of the fluorinated silica nanoparticles in the films.
Abstract: Monodispersive silica nanoparticles have been synthesized via the Stober process and further functionalized by adding fluorinated groups using fluoroalkylsilane in an ethanolic solution. In this process, six different sizes of fluorinated silica nanoparticles of varying diameter from 40 to 300 nm are prepared and used to deposit thin films on aluminum alloy surfaces using spin coating processes. The functionalization of silica nanoparticles by fluorinated group has been confirmed by the presence C–F bonds along with Si–O–Si bonds in the thin films as analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The surface roughnesses as well as the water contact angles of the fluorinated silica nanoparticle containing thin films are found to be increased with the increase of the diameter of the synthesized fluorinated silica nanoparticles. The thin films prepared using the fluorinated silica nanoparticles having a critical size of 119 ± 12 nm provide a surface roughness of ∼0.697 μm rendering the surfaces ...

TL;DR: A simple modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) through the adsorption of a graft copolymer, poly(l-lysine)-graft-poly(ethylenes glycol), PLL-g-PEG from aqueous solution revealed a near-perfect resistance to nonspecific protein adsorbption.
Abstract: We report a simple modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) through the adsorption of a graft copolymer, poly(l-lysine)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLL-g-PEG) from aqueous solution. In this approach, the PDMS surface was treated with oxygen plasma, followed by immersion into aqueous solution containing PLL-g-PEG copolymers. Due to the hydroxyl/carboxylic groups generated on the PDMS surface after oxygen plasma, the polycationic PLL backbone is attracted to the negatively charged surface and PEG side chains exhibit an extended structure. The PEG/aqueous interface generated in this way revealed a near-perfect resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption as monitored by means of optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS) and fluorescence microscopy.
