TL;DR: This is the first use of a catecholic initiator for surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) from metal surfaces to create antifouling polymer coatings and this biomimetic anchoring strategy is expected to be a highly versatile tool for polymer thin film surface modification for biomedical and other applications.
Abstract: In this paper, we demonstrate the first use of a catecholic initiator for surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) from metal surfaces to create antifouling polymer coatings. A new bifunctional initiator inspired by mussel adhesive proteins was synthesized, which strongly adsorbs to Ti and 316L stainless steel (SS) substrates, providing an anchor for surface immobilization of grafted polymers. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was performed through the adsorbed biomimetic initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate macromonomers with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface FT-IR, and contact angle analysis confirmed the sequential grafting of initiator and polymer, and ellipsometry indicated the formation of polymer coatings of up to 100 nm thickness. Cell adhesion experiments performed with 3T3-Swiss albino fibroblasts showed substantially reduced cell adhesion onto polymer grafted Ti and 316L SS substrates as compared to the unmodified metals. Moreover, micropatterning of grafted polymer coatings on Ti surfaces was demonstrated by combining SI-ATRP and molecular assembly patterning by lift-off (MAPL), creating cell-adhesive and cell-resistant regions for potential use as cell arrays. Due to the ability of catechols to bind to a large variety of inorganic surfaces, this biomimetic anchoring strategy is expected to be a highly versatile tool for polymer thin film surface modification for biomedical and other applications.

TL;DR: The role of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the surface modification of oxides and focuses on their biomedical applications, where a PEGylation of surfaces provides "stealth" characteristics to nanomaterials otherwise identified as foreign materials by human body.
Abstract: Application of inorganic nanoparticles in diagnosis and therapy has become a critical component in the targeted treatment of diseases. The surface modification of inorganic oxides is important for providing diversity in size, shape, solubility, long-term stability, and attachment of selective functional groups. This Minireview describes the role of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the surface modification of oxides and focuses on their biomedical applications. Such a PEGylation of surfaces provides "stealth" characteristics to nanomaterials otherwise identified as foreign materials by human body. The role of PEG as structure-directing agent in synthesis of oxides is also presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the surface of the PMMA grafted graphene oxide (GPMMA) was characterized by AFM, HRTEM, Raman, FTIR and contact angle.
Abstract: Graphene is a two-dimensional new allotrope of carbon, which is stimulating great curiosity due to its superior mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties. Particularly attractive is the availability of bulk quantities of graphene (G) which can be easily processed by chemical exfoliation, yielding graphene oxide (GO). The resultant oxygenated graphene sheets covered with hydroxyl, epoxy and carboxyl groups offer tremendous opportunities for further functionalization opening plenty of opportunities for the preparation of advanced composite materials. In this work poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains have been grafted from the GO surface via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), yielding a nanocomposite which was soluble in chloroform. The surface of the PMMA grafted GO (GPMMA) was characterized by AFM, HRTEM, Raman, FTIR and contact angle. The interest of these novel nanocomposites lies in their potential to be homogenously dispersed in polymeric dense matrices and to promote good interfacial adhesion, of particular relevance in stress transfer to the fillers. PMMA composite films were prepared using different percentages of GPMMA and pristine GO. Mechanical analysis of the resulting films showed that loadings as low as 1% (w/w) of GPMMA are effective reinforcing agents, yielding tougher films than pure PMMA films and even than composite films of PMMA prepared with GO. In fact, addition of 1% (w/w) of GPMMA fillers led to a significant improvement of the elongation at break, yielding a much more ductile and therefore tougher material. Thermal analysis showed an increase of the thermal stability properties of these films providing evidence that strong interfacial interactions between PMMA and GPMMA are achieved. In addition, AFM analysis, in friction force mode, is demonstrated to be an effective tool to analyse the surface filler distribution on polymer matrices.
