Abstract: Lewis acid mediated hydrosilylation of alkynes and alkenes on non-oxidized hydride-terminated porous silicon derivatizes the surface with alkenyl and alkyl functionalities, respectively. A very broad range of chemical groups may be incorporated, allowing for tailoring of the interfacial characteristics of the material. The reaction is shown to protect and stabilize porous silicon surfaces from atmospheric or direct chemical attack without compromising its valuable material properties such as high porosity, surface area and visible room-temperature photoluminescence. The reaction is shown to act on alkenes and alkynes of all possible regiochemistries (terminal and internal alkynes; mono-, cis- and trans-, di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted alkenes). FTIR as well as liquid- and solid-state NMR spectroscopies show anti-Markovnikov addition and cis stereochemistry in the case of hydrosilylated terminal alkynes. Material hydrosilylated with long-chain hydrophobic alkynes and alkenes shows a substantially slower surface oxidation and hydrolysis rate in air as monitored by long-term FTIR monitoring and chemography. BJH and BET measurements reveal that the surface area and average pore size of the material are reduced only slightly after hydrosilylation, indicating that the porous silicon skeleton remains intact. Elemental analysis and SIMS depth profiling show a consistent level of carbon incorporation throughout the porous silicon which demonstrates that the reaction occurs uniformly throughout the depth of the film. The effects of functionalization on photoluminescence were investigated and are shown to depend on the organic substituents.

Abstract: The effect of fibre treatments and matrix modification on mechanical properties of flax fibre bundle/polypropylene composites was investigated. Treatments using chemicals such as maleic anhydride, vinyltrimethoxy silane, maleic anhydride-polypropylene copolymer and also fibre alkalization were carried out in order to modify the interfacial bonding between fibre bundles and polymeric matrix. Composites were produced by employing two compounding ways: internal mixing and extrusion. Mechanical behaviour of both flax fibre bundle and hybrid glass/flax fibre bundle composites was studied. Fracture surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Results suggest that matrix modification led to better mechanical performance than fibre surface modification. A relevant fact is that silanes or MA grafted onto PP matrix lead to mechanical properties of composites even better than those for MAPP modification, and close to those for glass fibre/PP.

Abstract: We describe the introduction of titanium centers to cubic MCM-48 and SBA-15 mesoporous silica by hydrothermal and postsynthetic grafting techniques. MCM-48 was hydrothermally prepared with a gemini surfactant that favors the cubic phase and leads to a high degree of long-range pore ordering. This phase was chosen due to its high surface area (1100−1300 m2/g) and its three-dimensional, bicontinuous pore array. SBA-15, synthesized with a block copolymer template under acidic conditions, has a surface area from 600 to 900 m2/g and an average pore diameter of 69 A, compared to 24−27 A for MCM-48. Alkoxide precursors of titanium were used to prepare samples of Ti-MCM-48 and Ti-SBA-15. We have detailed the bulk and molecular structure of both the silica framework and the local bonding environment of the titanium ions within each matrix. X-ray powder diffraction and nitrogen adsorption shows the pore structure is maintained despite some shrinkage of the pore diameter at high Ti loadings by grafting methods. UV−v...

Abstract: Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) is widely used in dental implantology. However, it is only passively integrated in bone and the resulting fixation in the bone, which is necessary for the function, is mainly mechanical in its nature. With the objective of increasing the chemical interaction between the implant and bone tissue, several phosphonic acids were synthesized and grafted onto titanium disks. The bare polished Ti disks (Ti P) and the grafting of three phosphonic acids (methylenediphosphonic acid (MDP), propane-1,1,3,3-tetraphosphonic acid (PTP), and ethane-1,1,2-triphosphonic acid (ETP)) on these disks were characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). These surface analytical techniques provided strong indications of the formation of a chemical link between the Ti implant and the phosphonic acid molecule.
