Abstract: There is disclosed fiber optic sensor which detects a sample in contact with the sensor by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements, as well as methods and apparatus relating thereto. The fiber optic SPR sensor of this invention employs a limited range of incident angles and uses incident light having multiple wavelengths. In preferred embodiments, both an in-line transmission-based fiber optic SPR sensor and a terminated reflection-based fiber optic SPR sensor are disclosed. The fiber optic SPR sensor includes a surface plasmon supporting metal layer in contact with an exposed portion of the optical fiber core, and may optionally contain one or more additional layers deposited on the surface plasmon supporting metal layer. In further embodiments, methods are disclosed for detecting a sample by contacting the sample with the fiber optic SPR sensor of this invention, as well as sensing apparatus which contain the fiber optic SPR sensor in combination with a source of electromagnetic radiation of multiple wavelengths and a detection device.

Abstract: We report on surface plasmon (SP)-enhanced random laser emission from a suspension of silver nanoparticles in a laser dye operating at diffusive and subdiffusive scattering strengths. SP resonance enhances the scattering cross section, while the geometrical cross section remains small, thus providing a large gain volume. The localized electromagnetic field near the particle surface leads to enhanced absorption of excitation light and larger amplification of fluorescence. The metal-nanoparticle-based random laser yields larger linewidth narrowing at lower pump fluence threshold than a dielectric-scatterer-based random laser under equivalent conditions. These findings open the door to studies of applications related to light amplification assisted by SP in metallic nanoparticles.

Abstract: Utilizing surface plasmon resonance (SPR), we have developed novel methodology for the detection of conformational change(s) in immobilized proteins. A genetically altered E. coli dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR-ASC) was attached to a carboxymethyldextran matrix layer covering the sensor surface of an SPR biosensor through a disulfide linkage at the engineered protein's C-terminus. The DHFR-ASC-immobilized surface exhibited a larger response to acid treatment than reference surfaces lacking immobilized proteins. The SPR signal of the tethered protein and the molar ellipticity of DHFR-ASC in solution responded similarly to pH changes, consistent with the interpretation that changes in the SPR signal reflect conformational changes occurring during acid denaturation. A pH shift observed between the SPR signal and ellipticity changes may reflect a difference between surface and bulk pH. Abstract: Plasmonic sensing has been an important multidisciplinary research field and has been extensively used in detection of trace molecules in chemistry and biology. The sensing techniques are typically based on surface-enhanced spectroscopies and surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). This review article deals with some recent advances in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors and SPR sensors using either localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) or propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The advances discussed herein present some improvements in SERS and SPR sensing, as well as a new type of nanowire-based SPP sensor.
