TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used composition-tunable colloidal Au−Cu nanoparticles as a model system for exploring the issue of reliable experimental determination of composition in plasmonic alloy nanoparticles and correlation of this experimental data with theoretical predictions.
Abstract: For plasmonic alloy nanoparticles, theoretical modeling and experimental characterization are both central to our capabilities involving predictable synthesis and targeted applications. This article uses composition-tunable colloidal Au−Cu nanoparticles as a model system for exploring the issue of reliable experimental determination of composition in plasmonic alloy nanoparticles and correlation of this experimental data with theoretical predictions. Highly uniform spherical Au1-xCux alloy nanoparticles were synthesized with compositions ranging from x = 0 to 0.5. The particle compositions were analyzed independently using both powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which represent two of the most common nanoparticle composition analysis techniques. The plasmon resonance frequencies, determined experimentally for each sample using UV−vis spectroscopy, red shift with increasing copper content as expected. These experimentally determined plasmon resonance frequencies ...

TL;DR: This combination of techniques is very promising for the investigation of the lateral diffusion of transducin, can be extended to include signalling proteins downstream of the G protein, and may be applied to functional screening of other G protein-coupled receptors.
Abstract: Rhodopsin−transducin coupling was used as an assay to investigate a laterally patterned membrane reconstituted with a receptor and its G protein. It served as a model system to show the feasibility to immobilize G protein-coupled receptors on solid supports and investigate receptor activation and interaction with G proteins by one-dimensional imaging surface plasmon resonance. Supported membranes were formed by the self-assembly of lipids and rhodopsin from detergent solution onto functionalized gold surfaces. They formed micrometer-sized alternating regions of pure fluid phospholipid bilayers separated by bilayers composed of an outer phospholipid leaflet on a gold-attached inner thiolipid. Rhodopsin was found to incorporate preferentially into the phospholipid bilayer regions, whereas transducin was uniformly distributed over the entire outer surface of the supported patterned membrane. The influence of rhodopsin on the dark binding of transducin to lipid membranes was described quantitatively and compa...

TL;DR: In this article, the bacterial strain Escherichia coli, used for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles, was investigated by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, particle size analyzer.
Abstract: The biological process with the ability to study the shape of particles produced would therefore be a limelight of modern nanotechnology. The bacterial strain Escherichia coli, used for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles were investigated. These silver nanoparticles were characterized by means of UV–vis spectroscopy, particle size analyzer. The nanoparticles exhibited maximum absorbance at 400 nm in UV–vis spectroscopy corresponding to the plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles.

TL;DR: Results suggest that the compact LSPR sensor can perform qualitative and quantitative biochemical detection in real-time and thus has potential to be used in biomolecular sensing applications.
Abstract: A tapered fiber localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor is demonstrated for refractive index sensing and label-free biochemical detection. The sensing strategy relies on the interrogation of the transmission intensity change due to the evanescent field absorption of immobilized gold nanoparticles on the tapered fiber surface. The refractive index resolution based on the interrogation of transmission intensity change is calculated to be 3.2×10−5 RIU. The feasibility of DNP-functionalized tapered fiber LSPR sensor in monitoring anti-DNP antibody with different concentrations spiked in buffer is examined. Results suggest that the compact sensor can perform qualitative and quantitative biochemical detection in real-time and thus has potential to be used in biomolecular sensing applications.

TL;DR: In this article, a laser ablation in aqueous solutions of ligands by nanosecond laser pulses at 532 and 1064 nm is used to obtain colloidal suspensions which are stable in time because the copper particles are capped by ligand molecules.
Abstract: Copper colloidal nanoparticles are obtained by laser ablation in aqueous solutions of ligands by nanosecond laser pulses at 532 and 1064 nm and examined by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, along with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and zeta potential measurements. This fabrication method, besides providing SERS-active substrates without spectral interferences of reagents, as it generally occurs for the chemical reduction of metal ions, allows obtaining colloidal suspensions which are stable in time because the copper particles are capped by ligand molecules as long as they are formed by laser ablation. This prevents aggregation among metal nanoparticles and probably reduces overall oxidation of the copper surface.
