TL;DR: In this paper, a two-phase extraction of AuCl4- followed by its reduction with sodium borohydride in the presence of the surfactant, CPC, was exploited to examine their optical properties when exposed to various solvent systems and ligands by measuring the changes in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectrum.
Abstract: Cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC)-stabilized gold organosol in toluene has been prepared by using a two-phase (water−toluene) extraction of AuCl4- followed by its reduction with sodium borohydride in the presence of the surfactant, CPC. The surfactant-stabilized gold nanoparticles were exploited to examine their optical properties when exposed to various solvent systems and ligands by measuring the changes in the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectrum. It was seen that the position of the surface plasmon band of metal nanoparticles is greatly influenced by the solvents and the ligands under consideration. The surface plasmon absorption maxima modulates/varies between 520 and 550 nm for gold nanoparticles, depending on the refractive index of the solvent. The significant discovery presented here is that λmax of the LSPR shifts to the blue by 3 nm for the increase of one carbon atom in the alcohol chain. Cationic and anionic surfactants of different chain lengths induce changes in the optical prope...

TL;DR: Biosensing experiments with biotin-avidin coupling reveal that the two sensing platforms have very similar performance, despite a superior bulk refractive index sensing figure of merit for the SPR sensor.
Abstract: We present a direct experimental comparison between the refractive index sensing capabilities of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in gold nanodisks and propagating surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) on 50 nm gold films. The comparison is made using identical experimental conditions, and for the same resonance wavelength, λSP ≅ 700 nm. Biosensing experiments with biotin−avidin coupling reveal that the two sensing platforms have very similar performance, despite a superior bulk refractive index sensing figure of merit for the SPR sensor. The results demonstrate that LSPR sensing based on simple transmission or reflection measurements is a highly competitive technique compared to the traditional SPR sensor.

TL;DR: Swelling (and shrinking) of poly(2-vinylpyridine), P2VP, polymer brushes, caused by pH changes, could be readily monitored by transmission surface plasmon resonance, T-SPR, spectroscopy.
Abstract: Swelling (and shrinking) of poly(2-vinylpyridine), P2VP, polymer brushes, caused by pH changes, could be readily monitored by transmission surface plasmon resonance, T-SPR, spectroscopy. Gold nanoparticles attached to the P2VP polymer brushes dramatically enhanced the pH-induced shift in the T-SPR absorption spectra. (A 50 nm shift of the absorption maximum of the T-SPR spectrum of the supporting gold nanoislands was observed upon changing the pH from 5.0 to 2.0, corresponding to a swelling of the polymer brushes from 8.1 ± 0.7 to 24.0 ± 2.0 nm. Same shift in the opposite direction was observed upon changing the pH from 2.0 to 5.0.)

TL;DR: In Au-PbS nanostructures, two nontrivial synergistic effects are observed: extinction enhancement due to coupling of surface plasmon resonance in the Au core to the excitonic states in the semiconducting PbS shell, and strong p-type electronic doping of Au-S nanocrystal solids that is explained by the intraparticle charge transfer between the Pb S shell and the Aucore.
Abstract: We present a comparative study of optical and electronic properties for PbS nanocrystals and Au−PbS core−shell nanostructures. In Au−PbS nanostructures, we observed two nontrivial synergistic effects: (i) extinction enhancement due to coupling of surface plasmon resonance in the Au core to the excitonic states in the semiconducting PbS shell, and (ii) strong p-type electronic doping of Au−PbS nanocrystal solids that we explained by the intraparticle charge transfer between the PbS shell and the Au core.

TL;DR: The plasmon resonances of interacting silver nanowires with a 50 nm diameter are investigated and a dramatic field enhancement between the particles is observed, where the electric field amplitude reaches a hundredfold of the illumination.
Abstract: We investigate the plasmon resonances of interacting silver nanowires with a 50 nm diameter. Both non–touching and intersecting configurations are investigated. While individual cylinders exhibit a single plasmon resonance, we observe much more complex spectra of resonances for interacting structures. The number and magnitude of the different resonances depend on the illumination direction and on the distance between the particles. For very small separations, we observe a dramatic field enhancement between the particles, where the electric field amplitude reaches a hundredfold of the illumination. A similar enhancement is observed in the grooves created in slightly intersecting particles. The topology of these different resonances is related to the induced polarization charges. The implication of these results to surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) are discussed.
