TL;DR: In this article, a surgical video system consisting of at least one surgical lighthead, a video monitor, and a digital video camera is presented, which can be selectively substituted as needed.
Abstract: A surgical video system 10 captures an image of a surgical procedure and displays the image on a video monitor 24 remote from the surgical procedure. The system includes at least one surgical lighthead 12, a video monitor 24, and a digital video camera 22 integrated into the surgical lighthead. The digital video camera forms part of a modular digital video camera unit 20 that is conveniently removable from the surgical lighthead so that camera units having different functionalities and capabilities can be selectively substituted as needed. A control unit 26 is operatively connected to the video camera and generates command signals that are executed by the modular camera unit to rotate the image of the surgical procedure displayed on the video monitor by at least 360° and to effect image zoom operations. The control unit is responsive to input signals from multiple sources including a hand-held IR/RF remote transmitter module 38, a wall mounted keypad 30, and a footswitch 40. Associated with the control unit and the video monitor, a recorder 42 is provided for archival of video image data.

TL;DR: In this paper, an axially symmetrical light source means and multiple reflectors project light rays in a converging light pattern of uniform light intensity, which reduces shadow formation and forms a shadow-free zone for location of fixture handling and pattern controls.
Abstract: Illuminator apparatus and reflective optical methods directed to meeting the stringent requirements of surgical lighting and similar requirement uses. In the optical system, axially symmetrical light source means and multiple reflectors project light rays in a converging light pattern of uniform light intensity. The angled approach of light to the illuminated area reduces shadow formation and forms a shadow-free zone for location of fixture handling and pattern controls. Heat projection is reduced or minimized optically and the physical arrangement of the support structure provides for removal of heat from the area. Color correction, if required, can be achieved optically without relying on increase in or control of source intensity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a lighting device for a surgical operating room consisting of a light source for generating visible electromagnetic radiation, at least one light output operatively connected to the light source, and an attachment component connected to a light output for removably attaching the light output to a patient.
Abstract: A lighting device for a surgical operating room comprises a light source for generating visible electromagnetic radiation, at least one light output operatively connected to the light source for emitting and directing the electromagnetic radiation, and an attachment component connected to the light output for removably attaching the light output to a patient. The light output or outlets are mounted to a surgical retractor or, alternatively, to a flexible tube with an adhesive layer for temporarily binding the tube to a skin surface of the patient. The tube is also provided with a form retention element for enabling the tube to be bent to conform to a surgical site. A disposable transparent sheath surrounds the tube or the retractor. Other forms of the lighting device include goosenecks and a frame disposable on the operating table over the patient. In every case, the light source is a cold light source, i.e. spaced from the light output or outlets by an optical fiber.

14 Dec 1999TL;DR: An illumination system for illuminating an area within a room includes one or more light sources (18, 36), preferably disposed outside the room, one or multiple lighting heads (54) disposed within the room and fiber bundles (32, 38, 46, 50A, 50B, 50C, 52) to transmit light from the light sources to the lighting heads as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An illumination system (10) for illuminating an area within a room includes one or more light sources (18, 36), preferably disposed outside the room, one or more lighting heads (54) disposed within the room, one or more light pipes and/or fiber bundles (32, 38, 46, 50A, 50B, 50C, 52) to transmit light from the light source(s) (18, 36) to the lighting head(s) (54). The system includes means (22, 34, 44) for controlling both the intensity and the color rendering index of the light emitted from the lighting heads (54). In a preferred embodiment, the sources include an incandescent source (18) extending across the visible spectrum and a light emitted diode source (36) which emits essentially red light, and control of the color rendering index is effected by controlling the relative amounts of light from the two sources reaching the light head.
