TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a beam of x-ray radiation can be generated by simply focusing a single high-intensity laser pulse into a gas jet, which has keV energy and lies within a narrow cone angle.
Abstract: We demonstrate that a beam of x-ray radiation can be generated by simply focusing a single high-intensity laser pulse into a gas jet. A millimeter-scale laser-produced plasma creates, accelerates, and wiggles an ultrashort and relativistic electron bunch. As they propagate in the ion channel produced in the wake of the laser pulse, the accelerated electrons undergo betatron oscillations, generating a femtosecond pulse of synchrotron radiation, which has keV energy and lies within a narrow (50 mrad) cone angle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of the synchrotron continuum were calculated on the basis of a steady spherically symmetric MHD model of the flow in the Crab nebula.
Abstract: The properties of the synchrotron continuum are calculated on the basis of a steady spherically symmetric MHD model of the flow in the Crab nebula. The model accounts for the spectral distribution of the continuum from the optical to gamma-rays, and semiquantitatively for its observed spatial distribution. The model does not account for the radio portion of the Crab nebula's spectrum.

TL;DR: Femtosecond synchrotron pulses were generated directly from an electron storage ring and offer the possibility of applying x-ray techniques on an ultrafast time scale to investigate structural dynamics in condensed matter.
Abstract: Femtosecond synchrotron pulses were generated directly from an electron storage ring. An ultrashort laser pulse was used to modulate the energy of electrons within a 100-femtosecond slice of the stored 30-picosecond electron bunch. The energy-modulated electrons were spatially separated from the long bunch and used to generate ∼300-femtosecond synchrotron pulses at a bend-magnet beamline, with a spectral range from infrared to x-ray wavelengths. The same technique can be used to generate ∼100-femtosecond x-ray pulses of substantially higher flux and brightness with an undulator. Such synchrotron-based femtosecond x-ray sources offer the possibility of applying x-ray techniques on an ultrafast time scale to investigate structural dynamics in condensed matter.
