Abstract: We introduce a flexible optimization framework for nuclear norm minimization of matrices with linear structure, including Hankel, Toeplitz, and moment structures and catalog applications from diverse fields under this framework. We discuss various first-order methods for solving the resulting optimization problem, including alternating direction methods of multipliers, proximal point algorithms, and gradient projection methods. We perform computational experiments to compare these methods on system identification problems and system realization problems. For the system identification problem, the gradient projection method (accelerated by Nesterov's extrapolation techniques) and the proximal point algorithm usually outperform other first-order methods in terms of CPU time on both real and simulated data, for small and large regularization parameters, respectively, while for the system realization problem, the alternating direction method of multipliers, as applied to a certain primal reformulation, usuall...

Abstract: Operational modal analysis deals with the estimation of modal parameters from vibration data obtained in operational rather than laboratory conditions. This paper extensively reviews operational modal analysis approaches and related system identification methods. First, the mathematical models employed in identification are related to the equations of motion, and their modal structure is revealed. Then, strategies that are common to the vast majority of identification algorithms are discussed before detailing some powerful algorithms. The extraction and validation of modal parameter estimates and their uncertainties from the identified system models is discussed as well. Finally, different modal analysis approaches and algorithms are compared in an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study.

Abstract: In this note, we study optimal estimation design for sampled linear systems where the sensors measurements are transmitted to the estimator site via a generic digital communication network. Sensor measurements are subject to random delay or might even be completely lost. We show that the minimum error covariance estimator is time-varying, stochastic, and it does not converge to a steady state. Moreover, the architecture of this estimator is independent of the communication protocol and can be implemented using a finite memory buffer if the delivered packets have a finite maximum delay. We also present two alternative estimator architectures that are more computationally efficient and provide upper and lower bounds for the performance of the time-varying estimator. The stability of these estimators does not depend on packet delay but only on the overall packet loss probability. Finally, algorithms to compute critical packet loss probability and estimators performance in terms of their error covariance are given and applied to some numerical examples.

Abstract: Broadband macromodeling of large multiport systems by vector fitting can be time consuming and resource demanding when all elements of the system matrix share a common set of poles. This letter presents a robust approach which removes the sparsity of the block-structured least-squares equations by a direct application of the QR decomposition. A 60-port printed circuit board example illustrates that considerable savings in terms of computation time and memory requirements are obtained.
