TL;DR: In this paper, a fast approximative solution for deter-mining a software system's deployment that will maximize its availability is presented, and its performance is assessed.
Abstract: In distributed and mobile environments, the connections among the hosts on which a software system is running are often unstable. As a result of connectivity losses, the overall availability of the system decreases. The distribution of software components onto hardware nodes (i.e., the system's deployment architecture) may be ill-suited for the given target hardware en-vironment and may need to be altered to improve the software system's avail-ability. The critical difficulty in achieving this task lies in the fact that deter-mining a software system's deployment that will maximize its availability is an exponentially complex problem. In this paper, we present a fast approximative solution for this problem, and assess its performance. In addition to significantly improving availability, our solution, in general, also reduces the overall interaction latency in the system. We evaluate our solution on a large number of automatically generated application scenarios.

27 Apr 2011TL;DR: This paper presents a M2M system architecture based on LTE/LTE-A and highlights the delays associated with each part of the system and proposals on how the latency can be further reduced are described.
Abstract: Machine-to-machine communication has attracted a lot of interest in the mobile communication industry and is under standardization process in 3GPP. Of particular interest is LTE-Advanced support for various M2M service requirements and efficient management and handling of a huge number of machines as mobile subscribers. In addition to the higher throughput, one of the main advantages of LTE/LTE-A in comparison with the previous cellular networks is the reduced transmission latency, which makes this type of networks very attractive for real-time mobile M2M communication scenarios. This paper presents a M2M system architecture based on LTE/LTE-A and highlights the delays associated with each part of the system. Three real-time M2M applications are analyzed and the main latency bottlenecks are identified. Proposals on how the latency can be further reduced are described.

01 Apr 1995TL;DR: The authors decompose robot functions into modules organized according to their predefined interactions: sensor modules that accomplish various processings on data from physical sensors, effector modules that issue commands to effectors, servo-processes that establish links between perception and action to achieve closed-loop behaviors, and functional units that provide specific functionalities.
Abstract: This paper deals with the architecture and control structure of mobile robots. The authors decompose robot functions into modules organized according to their predefined interactions: sensor modules that accomplish various processings on data from physical sensors, effector modules that issue commands to effectors, servo-processes that establish links between perception and action to achieve closed-loop behaviors, and functional units that provide specific functionalities. These modules, and hence the robot system itself, are controlled by a control system that also enables the robot to execute missions (plans) expressed in a command language. The authors introduce and discuss a generic control system structure, composed of a supervisor that interprets the plan and oversees its execution, an executive for operating and managing robot modules and resources, a surveillance manager for detecting and reacting to asynchronous events, and an error recovery module for local plan mending and correction. Several experimental examples are given. >

22 Sep 2009TL;DR: The hybrid network architecture proposed in this paper specifically addresses WLAN infrastructures in industrial environments and discusses design challenges and describes the proposed system architecture and its main components.
Abstract: In factory communication systems, wireless networks are likely to complement wired automation networks, rather than replacing them. There is therefore an increasing interest in the way wireless and wired systems will interact and form a hybrid network. The hybrid network architecture proposed in this paper specifically addresses WLAN infrastructures in industrial environments. The paper discusses design challenges and describes the proposed system architecture and its main components.
