Abstract: With the popularity of portable devices such as personal digital assistants and personal communicators, as well as with increasing awareness of the economic and environmental costs of power consumption by desktop computers, energy efficiency has emerged as an important issue in the design of electronic systems. While power efficient ASIC's with dedicated architectures have addressed the energy efficiency issue for niche applications such as DSP, much of the computation continues to be implemented as software running on programmable processors such as microprocessors, microcontrollers, and programmable DSP's. Not only is this true for general purpose computation on personal computers and workstations, but also for portable devices, application-specific systems etc. In fact, firmware and embedded software executing on RISC and DSP processor cores that are embedded in ASIC's has emerged as a leading implementation methodology for speech coding, modem functionality, video compression, communication protocol processing etc. This paper describes architectural techniques for energy efficient implementation of programmable computation, particularly focussing on the computation needed in portable devices where event-driven user interfaces, communication protocols, and signal processing play a dominant role. Two key approaches described here are predictive system shutdown and extended voltage scaling. Results indicate that a large reduction in power consumption can be achieved over current day solutions with little or no loss in system performance.

Abstract: The Blue Gene®/L computer is a massively parallel supercomputer based on IBM system-on-a-chip technology. It is designed to scale to 65,536 dual-processor nodes, with a peak performance of 360 teraflops. This paper describes the project objectives and provides an overview of the system architecture that resulted. We discuss our application-based approach and rationale for a low-power, highly integrated design. The key architectural features of Blue Gene/L are introduced in this paper: the link chip component and five Blue Gene/L networks, the PowerPC® 440 core and floating-point enhancements, the on-chip and off-chip distributed memory system, the node- and system-level design for high reliability, and the comprehensive approach to fault isolation.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To develop a method enabling human-like, flexible supervisory control via delegation to automation. BACKGROUND: Real-time supervisory relationships with automation are rarely as flexible as human task delegation to other humans. Flexibility in human-adaptable automation can provide important benefits, including improved situation awareness, more accurate automation usage, more balanced mental workload, increased user acceptance, and improved overall performance. METHOD: We review problems with static and adaptive (as opposed to "adaptable") automation; contrast these approaches with human-human task delegation, which can mitigate many of the problems; and revise the concept of a "level of automation" as a pattern of task-based roles and authorizations. We argue that delegation requires a shared hierarchical task model between supervisor and subordinates, used to delegate tasks at various levels, and offer instruction on performing them. A prototype implementation called Playbook is described. RESULTS: On the basis of these analyses, we propose methods for supporting human-machine delegation interactions that parallel human-human delegation in important respects. We develop an architecture for machine-based delegation systems based on the metaphor of a sports team's "playbook." Finally, we describe a prototype implementation of this architecture, with an accompanying user interface and usage scenario, for mission planning for uninhabited air vehicles. CONCLUSION: Delegation offers a viable method for flexible, multilevel human-automation interaction to enhance system performance while maintaining user workload at a manageable level. APPLICATION: Most applications of adaptive automation (aviation, air traffic control, robotics, process control, etc.) are potential avenues for the adaptable, delegation approach we advocate. Abstract: Current tools do not provide adequate support to users for handling reminders. The main reason for this is the lack of use of rich context that specifies when a reminder should be presented to its recipient. We describe Cybre-Minder, a prototype context-aware tool that supports users in sending and receiving reminders that can be associated to richly described situations involving time, place and more sophisticated pieces of context. These situations better define when reminders should be delivered, enhancing our ability to deal with them more effectively. We describe how the tool is used and how it was developed using our previously developed Context Toolkit infrastructure for context-aware computing.
