TL;DR: A process is described that allows thousands of system architecture alternatives to be quickly and quantitatively assessed vs user needs, resulting in an understanding of the tradespace, including its key constraints and sensitivities, as well as an optimum architecture.
Abstract: New methods for rapid front-end development of complex systems are introduced. New tradespace exploration techniques, advances in integrated concurrent engineering, and application of risk analysis methods early in the design process allow rapid progress from poorly defined user needs to fairly detailed conceptual designs. An overview is provided of the methods. A process is described that allows thousands of system architecture alternatives to be quickly and quantitatively assessed vs user needs. The result is an understanding of the tradespace, including its key constraints and sensitivities, as well as an optimum architecture. This architecture is used to specify needs for space vehicles, which are designed using integrated concurrent engineering techniques. Research in risk and uncertainty, policy impacts, and information technology methods allows quantitative consideration of these factors, resulting in designs that are robust to uncertainties and policy impacts and potentially more versatile and flexible. Eight systems designed to date using the method are briefly reviewed. Key literature and a number of companion papers that go into depth on various aspects of the method are cited.

TL;DR: The methodology described in this paper presents broad guidelines which can be intelligently applied to develop DSP-based solutions to meet specific requirements.
Abstract: Programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) are emerging as the processors of choice in monitoring and control of high-end power electronics systems. This paper adopts a case study approach to illustrate a development methodology for DSP-based solutions. The unique features of DSP chips that make them ideal for real-time applications are highlighted. Power electronics systems where DSPs have been used are indicated. A case study in which a DSP-based solution was developed for a power quality monitoring application is presented. Through the case study, the issues involved in adopting a system architecture, selecting a DSP, and developing software for an application are discussed. The methodology described in this paper presents broad guidelines which can be intelligently applied to develop DSP-based solutions to meet specific requirements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a server-side triggered policy caching mechanism that allows for previous classification policy decisions made for previous data flows to be applied to subsequent new flows is proposed. But the caching mechanism is not considered in this paper.
Abstract: A data and control plane architecture for network devices. An example system architecture includes a network processing unit implementing one or more data plane operations, and a network device operably coupled to the network processing unit that implements a control plane. In a particular implementation, the network processing unit is configured to process network traffic according to a data plane configuration, and sample selected packets to the network device. The network device processes the sampled packets and adjusts the data plane configuration responsive to the sampled packets. In particular implementations, the control plane and data plane implement, a server-side triggered policy caching mechanism that allows for previous classification policy decisions made for previous data flows to be applied to subsequent new flows.

TL;DR: An expert system that processes the alarm lists in Portuguese control centers uses an original approach to deal with temporal reasoning and real-time constraints and incorporates an explanation module that enables its use as a tutor for novice operators.
Abstract: The alarm lists presented to control center operators are usually difficult to interpret. The authors present an expert system that processes the alarm lists in Portuguese control centers. This system makes an intelligent synthesis of the available information and presents it in a flexible and structured way. It uses an original approach to deal with temporal reasoning and real-time constraints. The system incorporates an explanation module that enables its use as a tutor for novice operators. >
