Abstract: A combined mode program-panel controller method for a distributed industrial process control system permits a system operator to configure the overall system architecture to control the sequential operation of the entire system or a sub-portion thereof. The program-panel controller includes a first user accessible graphic program by which the system architecture can be symbolically reconfigured and a second user accessible instruction set program by which the operating parameters of the so-configured system or a sub-portion thereof may be altered.

Abstract: Middleware has emerged as an important architectural component in supporting distributed applications. With the expanding role of middleware, however, a number of problems are emerging. Most significantly, it is becoming difficult for a single solution to meet the requirements of a range of application domains. Hence, the paper argues that the next generation of middleware platforms should be both configurable and re-configurable. Furthermore, it is claimed that reflection offers a principled means of achieving these goals. The paper then presents an architecture for reflective middleware based on a multi-model approach. The main emphasis of the paper is on resource management within this architecture (accessible through one of the meta-models). Through a number of worked examples, we demonstrate that the approach can support introspection, and fine- and coarse- grained adaptation of the resource management framework. We also illustrate how we can achieve multi-faceted adaptation, spanning multiple meta-models.

Abstract: Flying-adder frequency synthesis architecture is a novel technique of generating frequency on chip. Since its invention, it has been utilized in many commercial products to cope with various difficult challenges. During the evolution of this architecture, the issues related to circuit- and system-level implementation have been studied in prior publications. However, rigorous mathematical treatment on this architecture has not been established. In this paper, we attempt to explore and understand the signal characteristics and frequency domain behavior of this architecture through mathematical analysis. In the meantime, the underlying concept associated with this architecture, time-average-frequency, is formally introduced.

Abstract: A programmable analog system architecture and method thereof are described. The analog system architecture and method introduce a single chip solution that contains a set of tailored analog blocks and elements that can be configured and reconfigured in different ways to implement a variety of different analog functions. The architecture includes an array of analog blocks, including continuous time blocks and different types of switched capacitor blocks. The analog blocks can be electrically coupled to each other in different combinations to perform different analog functions. Each analog block includes analog elements that have changeable characteristics that can be specified according to the function to be performed. The architecture thereby facilitates the design of customized chips at less time and expense.

Abstract: We present the RAGS (Reference Architecture for Generation Systems) framework: a specification of an abstract Natural Language Generation (NLG) system architecture to support sharing, re-use, comparison and evaluation of NLG technologies. We argue that the evidence from a survey of actual NLG systems calls for a different emphasis in a reference proposal from that seen in similar initiatives in information extraction and multimedia interfaces. We introduce the framework itself, in particular the two-level data model that allows us to support the complex data requirements of NLG systems in a flexible and coherent fashion, and describe our efforts to validate the framework through a range of implementations.
