TL;DR: It is shown that the basic topology and access scheme of Tree-Net can be extended so that a family of tree-structured fiber-optic MANs (metropolitan area networks) can be defined to suit different needs, including data, voice, and video integration.
Abstract: A fiber-optic architecture, Tree-Net, is introduced that does not require intermediate processing components and supports a large number of stations. Tree-Net is based on a tree topology, passive station taps, and implicit token protocol. The properties and performance of Tree-Net are evaluated. It is shown that the basic topology and access scheme of Tree-Net can be extended so that a family of tree-structured fiber-optic MANs (metropolitan area networks) can be defined to suit different needs, including data, voice, and video integration. >

TL;DR: The system architecture of the testbed deployed on a real street along with the preliminary experiments are described and the open challenges and research directions on designing a future intelligent road lighting system are discussed.
Abstract: Traditional road lighting systems are outdated and should be replaced with systems which can sense their environment, i.e., users and their consumer electronics (CE) devices, and react intelligently. Realizing such a system requires an interdisciplinary approach which analyzes the efficient system architecture and communication technology while taking into account the user needs. To understand these necessities, subjective experiments should be conducted in a practical testbed, similar to ours. In this paper, we first present the state-of-the-art solutions in the literature. Then, we describe the system architecture of our testbed deployed on a real street along with the preliminary experiments. Finally, we discuss the open challenges and research directions on designing a future intelligent road lighting system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the concept of a virtual engineering community (VEC) to support concurrent product development within geographically distributed partners, and describe the system architecture, deployed security mechanisms, the prototype developed within collaborative product definition management (cPDM), and the system demonstration using a real test.
Abstract: Product definition management (PDM) is a system that supports management of both engineering data and the product development process during the total product life cycle. The formation of a virtual enterprise is becoming a growing trend, and vendors of PDM systems have recently developed a new generation of PDM systems called collaborative product definition management (cPDM). This paper presents the concept of a virtual engineering community (VEC) to support concurrent product development within geographically distributed partners. A previous case study has shown that collaborative engineering design may be modelled from a parameter perspective [1]. Effective implementation of the parameter approach raises the following problems: how to support data sharing and secure that span the partner borders. This paper describes the system architecture, deployed security mechanisms, the prototype developed within cPDM, and the system demonstration using a real test. The implementation of this architecture extends a common commercial PDM system (Axalan(TM)) and utilizes standard software to create a security framework for the involved resources. Collaboration infrastructure, shared team spaces and shared resources are essential to enable virtual teams to work together. Various organizational and technical challenges are implied. The outlined architecture features a federated data approach. These issues are discussed and potential perspectives in the area of collaboration engineering are identified.

TL;DR: A conceptual architecture that provides systems with self-reconfiguration capabilities, enacting a model-based adaptation process based on requirements models is proposed, then the main mechanisms to monitor for and diagnose failures are detailed.
Abstract: Self-reconfiguration is the capability of a system to autonomously switch from one configuration to a better one in response to failure or context change. There is growing demand for software systems able to self-reconfigure, and specifically systems that can fulfill their requirements in dynamic environments. We propose a conceptual architecture that provides systems with self-reconfiguration capabilities, enacting a model-based adaptation process based on requirements models. We describe the logical view on our architecture for self-reconfiguration, then we detail the main mechanisms to monitor for and diagnose failures. We present a case study where a self-reconfiguring system assists a patient perform daily tasks, such as getting breakfast, within her home. The challenge for the system is to fulfill its mission regardless of the context, also to compensate for failures caused by patient inaction or other omissions in the environment of the system.
