TL;DR: The deregulation of the domestic telephone market from 1 July 1995, together with the expected growth in telecom opportunities in China, will help Hong Kong to strengthen its position as a telecommunication hub for China.
Abstract: Hong Kong has a modern fixed-line and mobile telecom infrastructure, with spectacular growth in radio paging and mobile phones in recent years. It achieved total network digitalization in July 1993, replacing all local telephone exchanges with digital switches and linking all exchanges with over 64,000 km of optical fibre. Telecom authorities are also investing more than US$4 billion in optical fibre submarine cables to link Hong Kong and other countries in the Asia-Pacific and to the rest of the world. The deregulation of the domestic telephone market from 1 July 1995, together with the expected growth in telecom opportunities in China, will help Hong Kong to strengthen its position as a telecommunication hub for China. >
