Abstract: Summary Essential oils, flavors, and spices constitute a large and heterogeneous groups of substances to which humans are exposed. The essential oils are defined as a group of odorous principles soluble in alcohol and only to a limited extent in water. They consist of a mixture of esters, aldehydes, ketones, and terpenes. Relatively few members of this group of substances have been shown to cause cancer in animals. This paper summarizes knowledge on the carcinogenic activity of safrole, citrus oils ( d -limonene), turpentine oil ( l -pinene), eucalyptus oil (phellandrene), bergamot oil, and red pepper. The possible role of polycyclic hydrocarbons biosynthesized in plants is also discussed.

Abstract: An additive for lubricating oils comprises the reaction product of an unsaturated olefin or diolefin polymer or copolymer having a mean molecular weight of 1000-10,000 with an organic compound having a PSH group or a highly sulphated terpene, terpene alcohol or fatty oil. Polymers specified are those of butadiene and isoprene and copolymers of butadiene and styrene. Specified compounds having a PSH group are dialkyl and diaryl dithiophosphoric acids, and the reaction products of a sulphide of phosphorus or of phosphorus and sulphur with a terpene, polyterpene, terpene alcohol or fatty oil. The reaction may be carried out by merely heating the ingredients.ALSO:Lubricant compositions comprise a mineral lubricating oil and a minor amount of the reaction product of an unsaturated olefin or diolefin polyester or copolymer having a mean molecular weight of 1000-10,000 with an organic compound having a PSH group or a highly sulphated terpene, terpene alcohol or fatty oil. Polymers specified are those butadiene and isoprene and copolymers of butadiene with styrene. Specified compounds having a PSH group are dialkyl and diaryl dithiophosphoric acids, and the reaction products of a sulphide of phosphorus or of phosphorus and sulphur with a terpene, polyterpene, terpene alcohol or fatty oil. The composition may also contain a metaldialkyldithiophosphate, phosphoric acid esters, phosphosulphurized terpenes, sulphated fatty oils, chlorinated hydrocarbons, lead naphthenate, oil-soluble molybdenum compounds, metaldialkyldithiocarbamates, metal sulphonates, metal phenolates and fatty acid salts.
