Abstract: The terpenes present in cocoa flavour were analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The pyranoid linalool oxides, ocimene and nerolidol, were identified for the first time as cocoa volatiles. Linalool, which is the major terpene component in cocoa contributes markedly to the flowery and tea-like flavour of some cocoa varieties. Flavour grade beans contain relatively high concentrations of linalool and basic grade cocoas possess. The isolation of linalool by means of intensive (simultaneous distillation extraction) and more gentle methods (vacuum condensation) yields similar quantitative results. The estimation of the concentration ratio of linalool/benzaldehyde within steam distillates ist suitable for the industrial quality control of unroasted cocoas.

TL;DR: The chemical composition of the leaf oils of Juniperus excelsa obtained from trees growing in northern Greece and Kew gardens have been compared as mentioned in this paper, and the results show that the leaves of J. excelsa are dominated by cedrol (28.1%), α-pinene (22.5%), with moderate amounts of δ-3-carene (2.3%), myrcene (1.9%), and two unidentified constituents.
Abstract: The chemical composition of the leaf oils of Juniperus excelsa obtained from trees growing in northern Greece and Kew gardens have been compared. The leaf oil from native (Greek) J. excelsa is dominated by cedrol (28.1%), α-pinene (22.5%) and limonene (22.7%), with moderate amounts of δ-3-carene (2.3%), myrcene (1.9%) and two unidentified constituents. The oil from the cultivated juniper at Kew is also dominated by cedrol (40.0%) and α- pinene (46.2%), whereas limonene is small (1.3%). Sixty three of the 67 constituents have been identified.

TL;DR: In vitro cultures of the liverwort, Fossombronia pusilla, have been ititiated from spores and 7 terpenes were identified by GC/MS, a petrol ether extract and the isolatedTerpenes exerted antibacterial activity.
Abstract: In vitro cultures of the liverwort, Fossombronia pusilla, have been ititiated from spores. They grew well on Gamborg B5 medium supplemented with 2% saccharose and 12.5 micrograms/l vitamin B12. Undifferentiated cultures were obtained on Knop mineral solution with 4% glucose. The cultures produced the same constituents as collected material. Perrottetianal A and B, known substances from liverworts were isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as alpha-(-)-santonin. A hitherto unknown diterpene dialdehyde-8-hydroxy-9-hydroperrottetianal A--could also be characterized. Furthermore, 7 terpenes were identified by GC/MS. A petrol ether extract and the isolated terpenes exerted antibacterial activity.

TL;DR: In this article, the cembranoids of a Sarcophyton sp. soft coral, collected in Okinawa, were found to be composed predominantly of dihydrofuranocembranoid derivatives (2, 3, 5a, 6 and 7) together with a hydrocarbon cembrene C (1) and a lactonic cembansoid, sarcophytonin B (4).
Abstract: The cembranoids of a Sarcophyton sp. soft coral, collected in Okinawa, were found to be composed predominantly of dihydrofuranocembranoid derivatives (2, 3, 5a, 6 and 7) together with a hydrocarbon cembrene C (1) and a lactonic cembranoid, sarcophytonin B (4). The major constituents sarcophytonin A (2), deoxosarcophine (5a), and sarcophytonin C (6) were shown to be mixtures having similar enantiomeric ratios. The structures of the new compounds (3, 4, 6 and 7) were derived on the basis of spectroscopic studies and chemical correlations. Compounds 3 and 7 were supposed to be artefacts derived from 5a or 6 (3), and from 5a (7) respectively.

TL;DR: The biosynthetic pathway of some terpenic hydrocarbons present in the larval osmeterial secretions of Luehdorfia and Papilio species was examined by in vivo experiments, using 13C-labelled acetic acid, substantiating de novo biosynthesis of terpenes from acetate precursors by these larvae.

TL;DR: In this article, the terpene hydroquinone known as aureol has been found to have strong antiviral activity in the marine sponge Stronglophora hartmanii.
Abstract: Novel terpene hydroquinones have been isolated from the marine sponge Stronglophora hartmanii. These compounds have been found to have antiviral activity. Thus, these compounds, and derivatives thereof, can be used to treat viral infections. Additionally, the subject invention concerns the discovery that the terpene hydroquinone known as aureol has strong antiviral activity.
