Abstract: The need for high-speed communications networks that enable users to access remote resources will accelerate the development of many innovative distributed applications in the health care industry. A B-ISDN field trial network has been developed in North Carolina as a multiservice testbed for advanced applications research and development. Abstract: A small-scale helicopter testbed has been constructed to study the dynamics and control of helicopters carrying suspended loads. This paper presents an overview of the testbed, a dynamic model of the helicopter-load system, and a procedure used to estimate the unknown model parameters. An example experiment demonstrates the testbed's usefulness: A pilot-like feedback controller was applied to the helicopter, and horizontal repositioning maneuvers were performed. Adding input shaping to the controller caused a reduction in the maximum and residual load swing during the repositioning maneuver.

Abstract: Connection-oriented networks that offer guaranteed-rate circuits are being proposed as a solution to meet the high-end networking needs of distributed scientific research. This paper describes a transport protocol for data transfer across dedicated end-to-end circuits. We call this protocol Circuit-TCP (C-TCP). The key feature of C-TCP is to maintain a fixed sending rate, as closely matched to the circuit rate as possible, with the aim of achieving high circuit utilization. C-TCP is implemented by modifying TCP code in Linux. Experiments on a wide-area experimental circuit-switched testbed show that C-TCP is able to fully utilize circuit bandwidth and sustain a high circuit utilization. The challenge in this work lay in matching the variability inherent in general-purpose end hosts with the monotonic nature of circuits.

Abstract: Computer simulation has been used extensively as an effective tool in the design and evaluation of systems. One should not, however, underestimate the importance of validation-the process of ensuring whether a simulation model is an appropriate representation of the real-world system. Validation of wireless network simulations is difficult due to strong interdependencies among protocols at different layers and uncertainty in the wireless environment. The authors present an approach of coupling direct-execution simulation and traces from real outdoor experiments to validating simple wireless models that are used commonly in simulations of wireless ad hoc networks. This article documents a common testbed that supports direct execution of a set of ad hoc routing protocol implementations in a wireless network simulator. By comparing routing behavior measured in the real experiment with behavior computed by the simulation, the authors validate the models of radio behavior upon which protocol behavior depends.

Abstract: Keeping Internet users protected from cyberattacks and other threats is one of the most prominent security challenges for network operators nowadays. Among other critical threats, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) becomes one of the most widespread attacks in the Internet, which is very challenging to mitigate appropriately as DDoS attacks cause the system to stop working by resource exhaustion. Software-defined networking (SDN) has recently emerged as a new networking technology offering unprecedented programmability that allows network operators to configure and manage their infrastructures dynamically. The flexible processing and centralized management of the SDN controller allow flexibly deploying complex security algorithms and mitigation methods. In this paper, we propose a novel DDoS attack mitigation in SDN-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks for TCP-SYN and ICMP flood attacks utilizing machine learning approach, i.e., K-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN) and XGBoost. By deploying a testbed, we implement the proposed algorithms, evaluate their accuracy, and address the trade-off between the accuracy and mitigation efficiency. Through extensive experiments, the results show that the algorithms can efficiently mitigate the attack by over 98.0% while benign traffic is not affected.
