TL;DR: By implementing this novel scheme for the multipath delivery of H.264 SVC content to users in multihomed mobile networks on a realistic testbed, it is shown that it offers a significant improvement in received video quality over previously proposed alternative schemes.
Abstract: Consumer demand for portable wireless devices such as smartphones or tablets capable of receiving high quality video content has risen sharply in recent years. This paper considers the real-time delivery of streamed H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) content to users of such devices within mobile networks (e.g. situations where they are part of a group moving together on a bus or a train). We propose a novel scheme for the multipath delivery of H.264 SVC content to users in multihomed mobile networks .By implementing our scheme on a realistic testbed, we show that it offers a significant improvement in received video quality over previously proposed alternative schemes.

TL;DR: In this paper, object-based verification of deterministic forecasts from a convection-allowing ensemble for the 2009 NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Experiment is conducted, where the average of object attributes is compared between forecasts and observations and between forecasts from subensembles with different model dynamics.
Abstract: Object-based verification of deterministic forecasts from a convection-allowing ensemble for the 2009 NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Experiment is conducted. The average of object attributes is compared between forecasts and observations and between forecasts from subensembles with different model dynamics. Forecast accuracy for the full ensemble and the subensembles with different model dynamics is also evaluated using two object-based measures: the object-based threat score (OTS) and the median of maximum interest (MMI).Forecast objects aggregated from the full ensemble are generally more numerous, have a smaller average area, more circular average aspect ratio, and more eastward average centroid location than observed objects after the 1-h lead time. At the 1-h lead time, forecast objects are less numerous than observed objects. Members using the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting Model (ARW) have fewer objects, more linear average aspect ratio, and smaller average area t...

TL;DR: The research on two high-performance medical applications, the network equipment, and terminal interface adapters that have been implemented to serve those applications, and the insights that have be gained from this field trial experience are described.
Abstract: The need for high-speed communications networks that enable users to access remote resources will accelerate the development of many innovative distributed applications in the health care industry. A B-ISDN field trial network has been developed in North Carolina as a multiservice testbed for advanced applications research and development. The paper describes the research on two high-performance medical applications, the network equipment, and terminal interface adapters that have been implemented to serve those applications, and the insights that have been gained from this field trial experience. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a small-scale helicopter testbed has been constructed to study the dynamics and control of helicopters carrying suspended loads, and a dynamic model of the helicopter-load system is presented.
Abstract: A small-scale helicopter testbed has been constructed to study the dynamics and control of helicopters carrying suspended loads. This paper presents an overview of the testbed, a dynamic model of the helicopter-load system, and a procedure used to estimate the unknown model parameters. An example experiment demonstrates the testbed's usefulness: A pilot-like feedback controller was applied to the helicopter, and horizontal repositioning maneuvers were performed. Adding input shaping to the controller caused a reduction in the maximum and residual load swing during the repositioning maneuver.

TL;DR: Experiments on a wide-area experimental circuit-switched testbed show that C-TCP is able to fully utilize circuit bandwidth and sustain a high circuit utilization.
Abstract: Connection-oriented networks that offer guaranteed-rate circuits are being proposed as a solution to meet the high-end networking needs of distributed scientific research. This paper describes a transport protocol for data transfer across dedicated end-to-end circuits. We call this protocol Circuit-TCP (C-TCP). The key feature of C-TCP is to maintain a fixed sending rate, as closely matched to the circuit rate as possible, with the aim of achieving high circuit utilization. C-TCP is implemented by modifying TCP code in Linux. Experiments on a wide-area experimental circuit-switched testbed show that C-TCP is able to fully utilize circuit bandwidth and sustain a high circuit utilization. The challenge in this work lay in matching the variability inherent in general-purpose end hosts with the monotonic nature of circuits.
