Abstract: The ability to control the size and shape of nanoparticle assemblies is essential for the ultimate applications in sensors, catalysis, medical diagnostics, information storage, and quantum computation. This report demonstrates a novel mediator-template strategy toward this ability by exploring molecular driving forces exerted by a tridentate thioether as a mediator and tetraoctylammonium bromide as a templating agent. A combination of the ligand mediation, the surfactant templating, and their relative concentrations served as the driving forces. This combination leads to unprecedented spherical assemblies of gold nanoparticles in controllable sizes via manipulation of the relative concentrations of mediating and templating components.

Abstract: Hydrogen gas spontaneously adsorbs to Pd metal as atomic hydrogen and diffuses into the lattice to form PdHx. We previously showed that films of hexanethiolate-coated Pd monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) do not readily react with H2 due to the strong chemical bonding of the thiolate to the Pd, which inhibits the reaction. Consequently, these films require ozone or heat treatment for reactivity to occur, which is inconvenient for sensing or catalysis applications. In this report, we describe the reactivity between H2 and solid-state films of alkylamine-coated Pd, PdAg (10:1), and PdAu (10:1) MPCs and films of tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr)-stabilized Pd and PdAg (10:1) nanoparticles as determined by changes in film conductivity. Our data show that Pd nanoparticles coated with these more weakly coordinated amine or ammonium groups readily react with H2 without any need for ozone or heat treatment. Abstract: Growth of gold nanorods (AuNRs) by photochemical reduction of HAuCl4 in a micelle solution of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB) is studied. The effects of 300 and 254 nm UV light sources and their photon flux on the anisotropic growth of gold nanoparticles are investigated by controlling duration of irradiation and the number of lamps within a photochemical reactor. The resulting AuNRs were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, FTIR, and TEM. Experimental results indicate that a higher density of longer colloidal AuNRs form by increasing the number of incident photons (lamps) at 300 nm while the 254 nm lights produce a lower yield of shorter AuNRs. The yield of AuNRs also depends on the duration of irradiation which was found to be 6.00 h for 300 nm and 5.00 h for 254 nm radiation.
