TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss how developing a "lingua franca" can encourage more interdisciplinary research, providing two case studies (social networks and behavioral economics) to illustrate this theme.
Abstract: Social science is entering a golden age, marked by the confluence of explosive growth in new data and analytic methods, interdisciplinary approaches, and a recognition that these ingredients are necessary to solve the more challenging problems facing our world. We discuss how developing a "lingua franca" can encourage more interdisciplinary research, providing two case studies (social networks and behavioral economics) to illustrate this theme. Several exemplar studies from the past 12 y are also provided. We conclude by addressing the challenges that accompany these positive trends, such as career incentives and the search for unifying frameworks, and associated best practices that can be employed in response.

TL;DR: The essays are grouped into five broad topical clusters: Nationalism, Contestation and the Performance of Tradition; Strategies of Modernity: Heritage, Leisure, Dissociation; The Appropriation of Discourse; Methodologies and Ethnomethodologies; and The Making and Unmaking of Community: Ethnicity, Religiosity, Locality as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Nigel Rapport, ed., British Subjects: An Anthropology of Britain, Oxford and New York: Berg, 2002, 340 pages.Despite its subtitle, British Subjects is intended to highlight anthropological endeavour which addresses contemporary Britain rather than, as Rapport writes, to offer a definitive anthropological account of "Britain" or "British." Rapport argues for the strengths of such an approach, as well as the ways anthropology about Britain can be "paradigmatic of the discipline's possibilities, skills and significance" (p. 15). Such aspirations are largely borne out by the collection of 17 essays which make up this volume. The essays are grouped into five broad topical clusters: Nationalism, Contestation and the Performance of Tradition; Strategies of Modernity: Heritage, Leisure, Dissociation; The Appropriation of Discourse; Methodologies and Ethnomethodologies; and The Making (and Unmaking) of Community: Ethnicity, Religiosity, Locality. This placing of chapters within the groupings is well thought out and Rapport has written useful introductions to each cluster, drawing out the thematic intersections amongst the chapters appearing in them. The first cluster begins with Anne Rowbottom's considerations of the paradoxical relationship between hereditary privilege and democracy. Through fieldwork with people who regularly attend events where members of the royal family appear in public, Rowbottom builds an argument about practices of "vernacular religiosity" amongst this dedicated group of people who call themselves "Real Royalists." She demonstrates in turn how Real Royalists alternate between frameworks of difference and of national unity in order to circumnavigate the inherent contradictions of civil religion, constitutional monarchy, and democracy in Britain. The second chapter in this cluster is based on the Isle of Man where Susan Lewis describes a different sort of civic event: Tynwald Day. She traces some of the contested meanings this national day holds and argues that despite such contradictions, the event can still serve as a site of collective identity. Helena Wulff's chapter, exploring national ballet styles, is the final contribution to this section. Her research, based on the British Royal Ballet, demonstrates "the ongoing symbolic construction of national difference in the transnational world of ballet" (p. 79); the ways in which aesthetics, dance styles, performance costumes, rehearsal clothing, and bodily decoration are employed towards these ends; and the contradictions of a discourse of a "national" style in the face of the transnational flow of dancers. The second topical cluster, Strategies of Modernity, begins with a contribution by Sharon Macdonald. She draws on fieldwork at the Museum of Island Life on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to explore "the 'fetishization' of past everyday life" (p. 89) as a form of cultural practice. Macdonald's illuminating piece describes how once everyday objects (tools, crafts, domestic items, mass-produced goods) come to reside in a museum, they become in effect sacralized, and in turn "de-alienated" from being "just" commodities. She goes on to contextualize this practice within the particular contours of social uncertainty, arguing that the valorization of everyday things is a way of seeking "existential anchors" (p. 103) in the face of social fragmentation as well as a way perhaps of talking back against an all-pervasive consumerism. The next chapter, from Andrew Dawson, takes up the theme of social upheaval and strategies for managing it but within the context of a former coal-mining town in the north-east of England. Dawson is the first author in the collection to explicitly address gender relations. He does so through an exploration of the ways in which the pursuit of leisure (allotments, writing poetry, attending local football matches) serve to help people "work out" social change, and postindustrial change in particular. Dawson interweaves ethnography of postindustrial transformations, gender relations, and the lived experiences of older people with the notion of leisure practices as cultural resource. …

TL;DR: The portrayal of older adults and the public response to topics concerning older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chinese social media (Weibo topics, equivalent to hashtags on Twitter) is explored and the temporal trends of dominant themes to identify changes over time are explored.
Abstract: Objectives We explored the portrayal of older adults and the public response to topics concerning older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chinese social media (Weibo topics, equivalent to hashtags on Twitter). We also explored the temporal trends of dominant themes to identify changes over time. Method Topics related to older adults were searched in the Weibo topic search engine between January 20 and April 28, 2020. Overall, 241 topics and their view frequency and comment frequency were collected. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted to classify the topics into themes. The popularity of each theme was also analyzed. In addition, the frequency with which each theme appeared during the three major stages of the pandemic (outbreak, turnover, post-peak) was reported. Results Six main themes were identified. "Older adults contributing to the community" was the most prominent theme with the highest average comment frequency per topic. It was also the most dominant theme in the first stage of the pandemic. "Older patients in hospitals" was the second most prominent theme, and the most dominant theme in the second and third stages of the pandemic. The percentage of topics with the themes "Care recipients" and "Older adults caring for the young" increased over time. Discussion The portrayal of older people as being warm, competent, and actively exercising their agency is prevalent on Weibo. The Weibo-viewing public shows signs of interest in intergenerational solidarity during the pandemic in China. These findings are different from findings reported by studies conducted in the West.

TL;DR: A survey on the use of creation imagery in the Gospel of John can be found in this article, with the main focus being to accumulate and assess the evidence for or against all the apparent references to creation imagery.
Abstract: The article surveys recent scholarship on the use of creation imagery in the Gospel of John, with the aim of presenting a rather exhaustive register of possible references. Both the obvious and the less clear-cut allusions to Gen 1–3 are discussed, the main focus being to accumulate and assess the evidence (for or against) all the apparent references to creation imagery. Included in this examination are several unconvincing and even far-fetched proposals advanced by some modern scholars, in order to give the fullest possible picture of the current discourse on these issues. After discussing the creation theme in the Prologue (1:1–18), the article explores the presence of creation imagery in the Book of Signs (1:19–12:50) and the Book of Glory (13:1–21:25).

TL;DR: The authors argue that global change research is still paying insufficient attention to how to deliberately transform systems and cultures to avoid the risks that science itself has warned us about, and that the subjective realm of meaning making has not been adequately integrated into both understanding and action.
Abstract: Research on global environmental change has transformed the way that we think about human-environment relationships and Earth system processes. The four Ambio articles highlighted in this 50th Anniversary Issue have influenced the cultural narrative on environmental change, highlighting concepts such as "resilience," "coupled human and natural systems", and the "Anthropocene." In this peer response, I argue that global change research is still paying insufficient attention to how to deliberately transform systems and cultures to avoid the risks that science itself has warned us about. In particular, global change research has failed to adequately integrate the subjective realm of meaning making into both understanding and action. Although this has been an implicit subtext in global change research, it is time to fully integrate research from the social sciences and environmental humanities.

TL;DR: The authors report a case study of an experienced teacher's practices that reflect a complex integration of relevant theories in task design and discuss theoretical ideas that can potentially advance principles in the sequencing of examples for the purpose of helping students develop proficiency in applying formula.
Abstract: It is easy to dismiss the work of “teaching students to apply formula” as a low-order priority and thus trivialises the professional knowledge associated with this practice. Our encounter with an experienced teacher—through the examination of her practices and elaborations—challenges this simplistic assumption. There are layers of complexities that are as yet under-discussed in the existing literature. This paper reports a case study of her practices that reflect a complex integration of relevant theories in task design. Through examining her praxis around the theme of “recognise the form”, we discuss theoretical ideas that can potentially advance principles in the sequencing of examples for the purpose of helping students develop proficiency in applying formula.

Abstract: The main question of this Element is how the existence, supremacy, and uniqueness of an almighty and immaterial God bear on our own nature. It aims to uncover lessons about what we are by thinking about what God might be. A dominant theme is that Abrahamic monotheism is a surprisingly hospitable framework within which to defend and develop the view that we are wholly material beings. But the resulting materialism cannot be of any standard variety. It demands revisions and twists on the usual views. We can indeed learn about ourselves by learning about God. One thing we learn is that, though we are indeed wholly material beings, we're not nearly as ordinary as we might seem.

Abstract: This article attempts to deal with nature as a recurrent theme in William Wordsworth‟s poetry. He is one of the greatest romantic English poets. He views nature as a living entity that is a source of pleasure and education for him. He has given us sufficient heart-touching and beautiful poems that are the enduring treasures of romanticism, but only a few popular poems that reveal the growth and development of his love for nature, his concept of nature mysticism, joy in nature, universal love in nature, spiritual unity of nature, bond between nature and man, soothing influence and healing power of nature and nature‟s teaching potentiality have been taken from the corpus of his vast works under consideration for the study. Most of his poems can be well understood and analyzed through a vigilant consideration regarding his treatment of nature.
