Abstract: The coefficient of linear thermal expansion (α) for NaCl has been determined from 50°C to near the melting point (800°C) with an automatic recording dilatometer. The results confirmed the authors' suspicions that the values of α reported by Eucken and Dannohl are systematically high above 450°C. The experimental data are not satisfactorily represented by polynomial curves from the first through the eighth order as there is a decided increase in the thermal expansion above 600°C. Consequently, two second‐order polynomials are employed to adequately fit the data. The difference (Δα) at constant temperature between the high‐temperature polynomial and the extrapolation of the low‐temperature polynomial behaves logarithmically with respect to 1/T at high temperatures. The slope of this curve corresponds to a formation energy of 1.916 eV, which compares favorably with the energy required to form a pair of isolated positive and negative ion vacancies within the crystal (a Schottky defect).

Abstract: We analyse the anisotropic thermal expansion properties of a two-dimensional structurally rigid construct made from rods of different materials connected together through hinges to form triangular units. In particular, we show that this system may be made to exhibit negative thermal expansion coefficients along certain directions or thermal expansion coefficients that are even more positive than any of the component materials. The end product is a multifunctional system with tunable thermal properties that can be tailor-made for particular practical applications.

Abstract: We present experimentally determined biaxial strain coefficients for the longitudinal optical (LO) and transversal optical (TO) Raman lines in 3C-SiC. Suspended 3C-SiC membranes with a (100) texture are deflected by a variable pressure load on one side and the strain-induced shifts of the LO and TO Raman lines are measured while the strain is simultaneously calculated from the membrane deflection vs pressure. Using these results we measure the residual strain of 3C-SiC films grown on Si as a function of preparation conditions. The largest residual strain is found in thin samples which relaxes as film thickness increases to a value imposed by the different thermal expansion coefficients of 3C-SiC and Si. As the residual strain decreases and the film thickness increases, the Raman lines narrow indicating an improved crystalline quality. We also find a reduction of the residual strain with increasing growth rate.

Abstract: 欠陥型ホタル石構造を基本としたC型希土類酸化物のYb2O3とEr2O3の単結晶をアークイメージフローティングゾーン法により作製し, 四軸型単結晶X線回折計を用い, 室温から1260Kまで6点の温度での高温構造の解析を行った. 最終のR因子はYb2O3で0.034から0.050, Er2O3で0.036から0.051であった. 単位胞の平均線熱膨張係数はYb2O3で8.27×10-6K-1 (室温から850K) 及び10.31×10-6K-1 (850Kから1250K), Er2O3で7.47×10-6K-1 (室温から770K) 及び10.74×10-6K-1 (770Kから1250K) である. 欠陥型ホタル石構造における酸素の配列と, 金属-酸素間距離との間の関係並びにその温度依存性について考察した.
