TL;DR: In this article, the effects of temperature-dependent viscosity on the heat and mass transfer in nonlinear MHD boundary layer flow past a vertical porous plate are studied in the presence of a magnetic field, thermal radiation, thermophoresis, and an n th-order homogeneous chemical reaction.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of radiation on the Sakiadis flow along a moving plate in a calm fluid was considered and the results in that paper have been produced using a linearized Rosseland approximation, which is valid only for small temperature differences between the plate and the ambient fluid.
Abstract: In a recent paper by Cortell (2008 Chin. Phys. Lett. 25 1340–2) the effect of radiation on the classical Sakiadis flow along a moving plate in a calm fluid was considered. The results in that paper have been produced using a linearized Rosseland approximation, which is valid only for small temperature differences between the plate and the ambient fluid. In the present work, we extend the above work to a nonlinear Rosseland approximation, which is valid for both small and large temperature differences.

TL;DR: In this article, a confined electric arc for the determination of gas transport properties is developed to the point that the resultant properties are found within a few percent, including the arc electrical gradient characteristic, the flow pressure drop, the radiative heat transfer, the spectral temperature distribution, and microwave resonance characteristics.
Abstract: A confined electric arc for the determination of gas transport properties is developed to the point that the resultant properties are found within a few percent. The measurements include the arc electrical gradient characteristic, the flow pressure drop, the radiative heat transfer, the spectral temperature distribution, and microwave resonance characteristics. Values of the electrical and thermal conductivity of equilibrium argon are tabulated for the temperature range from 7500 to 13 750°K. Helium in the confined arc at atmospheric pressure up to 400 A is shown not to be in thermodynamic equilibrium and hence its equilibrium properties cannot be determined by use of this experimental arrangement.

TL;DR: The plumage of birds provides a critical thermal buffer between the animal and its environment as mentioned in this paper, and the addition of solar radiation is equivalent to three to fourfold changes in wind speed.
Abstract: The plumage of birds provides a critical thermal buffer between the animal and its environment. Rates of energy expenditure are strongly influenced by the thermal properties of the environment or the microclimates the animal occupies. Current data suggest that the addition of solar radiation is equivalent to three to four-fold changes in wind speed and that solar heat gain can be extremely sensitive to changes in wind speed. Dry heat transfer through the plumage occurs by three avenues 1) conduction and free convection through air 2) conduction along the solid elements of the plumage and 3) radiation. Overall, about 95% of the total heat flow is evenly divided between the first two avenues. Radiative heat transfer accounts for only about 5% of total heat flow. Plumage color, as well as the microstructure and micro-optical properties of plumage elements, when combined with environmental properties (e.g., wind speed), determine the radiative heat loads that birds acquire from solar radiation.
