TL;DR: In this paper, DOPO has been grafted onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) by reacting epoxy ring groups together with the reduced graphene structure (DOPO-rGO).
Abstract: 9,10-Dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) has been grafted onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) by reacting epoxy ring groups together with the reduced graphene structure (DOPO-rGO). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy confirm that DOPO not only covalently bonded to the GO, as a functionalization moiety, but also partly restored the conjugate structure of GO, as a reducing agent. A pelletlike structure of DOPO on rGO sheets was observed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), contributing to good dispersion of rGO in nonpolar toluene. Furthermore, the flame retardancy and thermal stability of DOPO-rGO/epoxy nanocomposites containing various weight fractions of DOPO-rGO were investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in nitrogen. Significant increases in the char yield and LOI were achieved with the addition of...

TL;DR: In this article, it was found that the reactivity of the alumina support changes the surface structure and chemical composition of catalysts significantly when the metal−support interaction is weak, and the cobalt content on the surface decreases upon the increase in support reactivity.
Abstract: Co/Al2O3 catalysts have been prepared with conventional impregnation and sol−gel methods to vary the chemical reactivity of the alumina support. The material system has been investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) (with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA)), and gas chromotography (GC) for the catalytic oxidation of CO. It had been found that the reactivity of the support changes the surface structure and chemical composition of catalysts significantly. When the metal−support interaction is weak, Co3O4 is a predominant surface phase (which is interfaced by a “cobalt surface phase”). With an increase in support reactivity, CoO and CoAl2O4 are found to be present on the surface. The cobalt content on the surface decreases upon the increase in suppor...

TL;DR: In this paper, a new sulfonated tetraamine and the corresponding polybenzimidazoles (sPBI) were synthesized using a strong acid medium was used as polymerization solvent, which allowed to obtain high molecular weight sPBI.
Abstract: In the present work, a new sulfonated tetraamine and the corresponding sulfonated polybenzimidazoles (sPBI) were synthesized. For the sake of determining the best polymerization conditions, a study involving model compounds was first performed. A strong acid medium was used as polymerization solvent, which allowed to obtain high molecular weight sPBI. A series of polymers with ion exchange capacity (IEC) ranging from 0 to 2.6 mequiv/g were synthesized using a non-sulfonated tetraamine as a comonomer. The chemical structure of those polymers was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) as well as by titration. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and viscosity measurement were performed as well. On the other hand, different architectures of the copolymers were prepared, i.e., random, sequenced copolymers, and blends of the homopolymers. The membranes prepared from the sPBI display low water uptake. The ionic conductivities measured in the hydrated state at room temper...

TL;DR: In this paper, solid solutions are produced continuously by hydrolysis of mixtures of cerium and zirconium acetate in near-critical water at ca.300°C and 25MPa using a flow reactor.
Abstract: Ce1 − xZrxO2 solid solutions are produced continuously by hydrolysis of mixtures of cerium ammonium nitrate and zirconium acetate in near-critical water at ca. 300 °C and 25 MPa using a flow reactor. Rapid hydrothermal coprecipitation leads to nano-particulate Ce1 − xZrxO2 (x = 0–1), the composition of which is largely determined by the initial relative concentrations of Ce4+ and Zr4+ ions in the starting solution. The freshly prepared materials are crystalline, possess very small particle sizes, and have high surface areas. The effects of calcining the products in air at high temperature have been studied. Apart from the 1∶1 Ce∶Zr solid solution, the phases of Ce1 − xZrxO2 remain stable on calcining to 1000 °C, but the particles sinter and the surface areas decrease significantly. The materials have been characterised by Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXD), IR and Raman Spectroscopy, microanalysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and BET (surface area measurements). In selected cases, high resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images were recorded to examine the particle morphology.
