TL;DR: In this paper, a novel structure for a three-phase four-wire (3P4W) distribution system utilizing unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel structure for a three-phase four-wire (3P4W) distribution system utilizing unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The 3P4W system is realized from a three-phase three-wire system where the neutral of series transformer used in series part UPQC is considered as the fourth wire for the 3P4W system. A new control strategy to balance the unbalanced load currents is also presented in this paper. The neutral current that may flow toward transformer neutral point is compensated by using a four-leg voltage source inverter topology for shunt part. Thus, the series transformer neutral will be at virtual zero potential during all operating conditions. The simulation results based on MATLAB/Simulink are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed UPQC-based 3P4W distribution system.

TL;DR: With the proposed full-feedforward schemes, the injected grid current harmonics and unbalance caused by grid voltages can be greatly reduced.
Abstract: This paper investigates the feedforward schemes of grid voltages for a three-phase LCL-type grid-connected inverter. The full-feedforward functions of grid voltages are derived for the stationary α- β frame, synchronous d - q frame, and decoupled synchronous d - q frame-controlled three-phase LCL-type grid-connected inverters. The derived full-feedforward functions mainly consist of three parts which are proportional, derivative, and second derivative parts. The use of the traditional proportional feedforward function in the three-phase LCL -type grid-connected inverter will result in the amplification of the high-frequency injected grid current harmonics. With the proposed full-feedforward schemes, the injected grid current harmonics and unbalance caused by grid voltages can be greatly reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed feedforward schemes is verified by the experimental results.

TL;DR: In this article, a control strategy for actively damping high frequency resonances (above 1.5 kHz) in the input LC filter is presented, which prevents pollution of the utility with current ripple due to the PWM switching.
Abstract: The voltage source power converter (VSC) provides constant/controllable DC bus voltage, regenerating capability, controllable power factor and nearly sinusoidal input current. If an input LC filter is added, it prevents pollution of the utility with current ripple due to the PWM switching. A novel control strategy for actively damping high frequency resonances (above 1.5 kHz) in the input LC filter is presented. No additional sensors to the standard VSC are required. Theoretical results of the analysis and simulation are experimentally verified.

TL;DR: In this article, three-phase PFC rectifier topologies with sinusoidal input currents and controlled output voltage are derived from known single-phase rectifier systems and/or passive 3-phase diode rectifiers, and analytical formulas for calculating the current stresses on the power semiconductors of selected topologies are provided.
Abstract: In this paper, three-phase PFC rectifier topologies with sinusoidal input currents and controlled output voltage are derived from known single-phase PFC rectifier systems and/or passive three-phase diode rectifiers. The systems are classified into hybrid and fully active PWM boost-type or buck-type rectifiers, and their functionality and basic control concepts are briefly described. This facilitates the understanding of the operating principle of three-phase PFC rectifiers starting from single-phase systems, and organizes and completes the knowledge base with a new hybrid three-phase buck-type PFC rectifier topology denominated as Swiss Rectifier. In addition, analytical formulas for calculating the current stresses on the power semiconductors of selected topologies are provided, and rectifier systems offering a high potential for industrial applications are comparatively evaluated concerning the semiconductor stresses, the loading and volume of the main passive components, and the DM and CM EMI noise level. Finally, core topics of future research on three-phase PFC rectifier systems are discussed, such as the analysis of novel hybrid bucktype PFC rectifier topologies, the direct input current control of bucktype systems, the multi-objective optimization of PFC rectifier systems concerning efficiency and power density, and the investigation of the system performance sensitivity to semiconductor and passive components technology.

TL;DR: A nonlinear control technique for a three-phase shunt hybrid power filter (SHPF) to enhance its dynamic response when it is used to compensate for harmonic currents and reactive power is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents a nonlinear control technique for a three-phase shunt hybrid power filter (SHPF) to enhance its dynamic response when it is used to compensate for harmonic currents and reactive power. The dynamic model of the SHPF system is first elaborated in the stationary ldquoabcrdquo reference frame and then transformed into the synchronous orthogonal ldquodqrdquo reference frame. The ldquodqrdquo frame model is divided into two separate loops, namely, the two current dynamic inner loops and the dc-voltage dynamic outer loop. Proportional-integral (PI) controllers are utilized to control the SHPF input currents and dc-bus voltage. The currents track closely their references so that the SHPF behaves as a quasi-ideal current source connected in parallel with the load. It provides the reactive power and harmonic currents required by the nonlinear load, thereby achieving sinusoidal supply currents in phase with supply voltages under dynamic and steady-state conditions. The SHPF consists of a small-rating voltage-source inverter (VSI) in series with a fifth-harmonic tuned LC passive filter. The rating of the VSI in the SHPF system is much smaller than that in the conventional shunt active power filter because the passive filter takes care of the major burden of compensation. The effectiveness of the control technique is demonstrated through simulation and experimentation under steady-state and dynamic operating conditions.
