Abstract: A problem of power factor correction for a class of three-phase boost ac/dc power converters is addressed in this paper. A full-bridge hardware topology is studied and used to address the basics of the efficient power conversion with high values of power factor. The sliding mode control drives the output voltage to the desired dc level in the presence of external disturbances and internal parameter uncertainties while providing a value of power factor that is close to unity (greater than 97%). Sliding-mode observers are employed to estimate variation in load and phase resistances-subject of real-time adjustment in the control law. Multirate numerical simulation illustrates the efficiency of the proposed methodology and proves its ability to be implemented in digital form.

Abstract: A quasi-resonant dc link soft switching inverter is presented, capable of PWM operation. It requires only two additional switches, and allows loss limitation in the resonant circuit. The modulation method adopted is able to perform true PWM operation at any modulation index. Simulated and experimental results are reported, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Abstract: With increasing level of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration into low voltage (LV) distribution networks, analysis with realistic network models is necessary for adequate capturing of network behavior. Traditional three-phase 3-wire power flow approach lacks the capability of exact analysis of 4-wire multigrounded LV networks due to the approximation of merging the neutral wire admittance into the phase wire admittances. Such an approximation may not be desirable when neutral wire and grounding effects need to be assessed, especially in the presence of single-phase solar power injection that may cause a significant level of network unbalance. This paper proposes a three-phase power flow approach for distribution networks while preserving the original 3-wire and 4-wire configurations for more accurate estimation of rooftop PV impacts on different phases and neutrals. A three-phase transformer model is developed to interface between the 3-wire medium voltage (MV) and the 4-wire LV networks. Also an integrated network model is developed for an explicit representation of different phases, neutral wires and groundings of a distribution system. A series of power flow calculations have been performed using the proposed approach to investigate the impacts of single-phase variable PV generation on an Australian distribution system and results are presented.

Abstract: Power flow analysis is one of the tools that is required in most of the distribution system studies. An important characteristic of distribution systems is the load unbalance in the phases and a three-phase power flow analysis is needed. In this paper, a three-phase linear power flow (3LPF) formulation is derived based on the fact that in a typical distribution system, voltage angles and magnitudes vary within relatively narrow boundaries. The accuracy of the proposed 3LPF is verified using several test cases. Potential applications of the proposed method are in distribution systems state estimation and volt-VAR optimization.

Abstract: Various techniques are employed alone or in combination, to reduce the levelized cost of energy imposed by a power plant system. Solar energy concentrators in the form of inflated reflectors, focus light onto photovoltaic receivers. Multiple concentrators are grouped into a series-connected cluster that shares control circuitry and support structure. Individual concentrators are maintained at their maximum power point via balance controllers that control the flow of current that shunts this series connection. DC current from clusters is transmitted moderate distances to a centralized inverter. The inductance of transmission lines is maximized using an air-spaced twisted pair, enhancing the performance of boost-type three phase inverters. Cluster outputs are separate from individual inverters in massively interleaved arrays co-located at a central location. Step-up transformers convert inverter voltages to grid voltages, and small transformers provide isolation and voltage step-up only on receiver-to-receiver imbalance currents, typically <20% of the total current.
