Abstract: A novel multi-phase multi-level ac motor drive is analyzed in this paper. The proposed scheme is based on four conventional 2-level three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) supplying the open-end windings of a dual three-phase motor (asymmetric six-phase machine), quadrupling the power capability of a single VSI with given voltage and current ratings. The proposed control algorithm is able to generate multi-level voltage waveforms, equivalent to the ones of a 3-level inverter, and to share the total motor power among the four dc sources within each switching period. The proposed ac motor drive has been numerically implemented and a complete set of simulation results is given to prove the effectiveness of the whole scheme.

Abstract: This paper proposes a single-stage three-phase photovoltaic (PV) system that features enhanced maximum power point tracking capability, and an improved energy yield under partial shading conditions. Further, the proposed PV system can effectively double the maximum permissible dc voltage of a grounded conventional single-stage PV system, with no need for insulators, fuses, disconnects, and switchgear of a higher voltage class, with respect to safety/insulation standards or common system integration practices exercised for conventional grounded single-stage PV systems. The proposed PV system is realized through the parallel connection of an auxiliary half-bridge converter to the dc link of a conventional single-stage PV system and, therefore, is also an option for retrofit applications. This paper presents the mathematical model, principles of operation, and the control loops of the proposed single-stage PV system. The performance of the proposed single-stage PV system is demonstrated by time-domain simulation studies conducted on a detailed switched model in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment.

Abstract: An electric arc welding apparatus comprising at least a first consumable electrode and a second consumable electrode movable in unison along a welding path between the edges of two adjacent, mutually grounded plates, a first power supply for passing a first welding current at a first low frequency between the first electrode and the two plates, a second power supply for passing a second welding current at a second low frequency between the second electrode and the two plates, where each of the power supplies includes a three phase voltage input operated at line frequency, a rectifier to convert the input voltage to a DC voltage link and a high frequency switching type inverter converting the DC voltage link to a high frequency AC current, an output rectifier circuit to provide a positive voltage terminal and a negative voltage terminal, and an output switching network operated at a given low frequency for directing a pulsating welding current at the given low frequency from the two terminals across one of the electrodes and the plates, and a circuit for independently adjusting the given low frequency so the value of the first low frequency of the first power supply is different from the second low frequency of the second power supply.

Abstract: This paper describes what factors (i.e., load and supply) have an important effect on the neutral conductor current. It is shown that an asymmetry up to 10/spl deg/ or an unbalance of 10% in the power supply has only a minor effect on the RMS value of the neutral conductor current. An unbalance in load conditions increases the neutral conductor current. Harmonics in the power supply voltage highly affect the RMS value of the neutral conductor current.

Abstract: A novel three-phase AC-DC-AC Sparse Matrix Converter (SMC) having no energy storage elements in the DC link and employing only 15 IGBTs as opposed to 18 IGBTs of a functionally equivalent conventional AC-AC matrix converter (CMC) is pro- posed. It is shown that the realization effort could be further reduced to only 9 IGBTs (Ultra Sparse Matrix Converter, USMC) in case the phase displacement of the fundamentals of voltage and current at the input and at the output is limited to ±π/6. The dependency of the voltage and current transfer ratios of the systems on the operating parameters is analyzed and a space vector modulation scheme is described in combination with a zero current commutation proce- dure. Furthermore, a safe multi-step current commutation concept is treated briefly. Conduction and switching losses of the SMC and USMC are calculated in analytically closed form. Finally, the theoretical results are verified in Part II of the paper by digital simulations and results of a first experimental investigation of a 10kW/400V SMC prototype are given.
