TL;DR: The Ina Tile Company found that increasing the content of lime in the tile formulation from 1% to 5% reduced the tile size variation by a factor of ten as discussed by the authors, which was a breakthrough for the tile industry.
Abstract: A Japanese ceramic tile manufacturer knew in 1953 that is more costly to control causes of manufacturing variations than to make a process insensitive to these variations. The Ina Tile Company knew that an uneven temperature distribution in the kiln caused variation in the size of the tiles. Since uneven temperature distribution was an assignable cause of variation, a process quality control approach would have increased manufacturing cost. The company wanted to reduce the size variation without increasing cost. Therefore, instead of controlling temperature distribution they tried to find a tile formulation that reduced the effect of uneven temperature distribution on the uniformity of tiles. Through a designed experiment, the Ina Tile Company found a cost-effective method for reducing tile size variation caused by uneven temperature distribution in the kiln. The company found that increasing the content of lime in the tile formulation from 1% to 5% reduced the tile size variation by a factor of ten. This discovery was a breakthrough for the ceramic tile industry.

TL;DR: In this paper, a tile lighting system is provided in which an interior space of a tile is lit by LEDs, such as in a grid or edge-lit formation, and a light diffusing panel is disposed over the interior space.
Abstract: A tile lighting system is provided in which an interior space of a tile is lit by LEDs, such as in a grid or edge-lit formation, and a light diffusing panel is disposed over the interior space. The tile lighting system can be combined with others to tile any surface, such as a floor, ceiling, wall, or building exterior. Lighting control signals can be supplied to generate a wide range of effects on the tile lighting units, including effects coordinated among different tile lighting units. Two- and three-dimensional embodiments are contemplated.

TL;DR: In this paper, an image tile-based digital mapping system is configured for generating map tiles during an offline session, and serving selected sets of those tiles to a client when requested.
Abstract: Digital tile-based mapping techniques are disclosed that enable efficient online serving of aesthetically pleasing maps. In one particular embodiment, an image tile-based digital mapping system is configured for generating map tiles during an offline session, and serving selected sets of those tiles to a client when requested. Also provided are solutions for handling map labels and other such features in a tile-based mapping system, such as when a map label crosses map tile boundaries. Various processing environments (e.g., servers or other computing devices) can be employed in the system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system for determining the dimensional volume of a package by moving the package on a conveyor belt system over a horizontally disposed strip containing machine-readable indicia indicating units of incremental length along said strip starting from a zero point and by a vertically disposed strip consisting of machinereadable indicators indicating unit lengths along the strip.
Abstract: A method and system for determining the dimensional volume of a package by moving the package on a conveyor belt system over a horizontally disposed strip containing machine-readable indicia indicating units of incremental length along said strip starting from a zero point and by a vertically disposed strip containing machine-readable indicia indicating units of incremental length along said strip starting from a zero point, with a horizontally disposed reader above the horizontally disposed strip to read the uncovered indicia on the horizontally disposed strip and a vertically disposed reader able to read the uncovered indicia on the vertically disposed strip with a computer to determine the lowest uncovered incremental length measurement of the indicia on tile horizontally disposed strip, such measurement being tile width of tile package and the lowest uncovered incremental length measurement of tile indicia on tile vertically disposed strip, such measurement being tile height of tile package, and a device to measure tile package's length as it moves on the conveyor belt system such that the computer calculates tile package's dimensional volume by taking tile product of tile measurements for the length, tile height and tile width of the package. A weigh-in-motion scale is utilized on the conveyor belt system, the output of which is also directed to the computer to calculate tile package's dimensional weight.
