TL;DR: In this article, the authors used time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) for critical sizing of throughwall orientated defects in a wide range of components, primarily because it is intrinsically more accurate than amplitude-based techniques.
Abstract: Ultrasonic time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) is the preferred technique for critical sizing of throughwall orientated defects in a wide range of components, primarily because it is intrinsically more accurate than amplitude-based techniques. For the same reason, TOFD is the preferred technique for sizing the cracks in control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) penetration adapters, which have been the subject of much recent attention. Once the considerable problem of restricted access for the UT probes has been overcome, this inspection lends itself to very high accuracy defect sizing using TOFD. In qualification trials under industrial conditions, depth sizing to an accuracy of {<=} 0.5 mm has been routinely achieved throughout the full wall thickness (16 mm) of the penetration adapters, using only a single probe pair and without recourse to signal processing. TL;DR: In this article, an automatic water feeding coupling device adopting TOFD (Time Of Flight Diffraction) and ultrasonic detection in industrial metal non-destructive examination is presented. But the device is not suitable for various detection occasions, particularly for places which lack power supplies and are far from water sources.
Abstract: The utility model relates to an automatic water feeding coupling device adopting TOFD (Time Of Flight Diffraction) and ultrasonic detection in industrial metal nondestructive examination. The device is provided with a water tank, wherein a water inlet is formed in the upper end of the water tank, a water outlet is formed in the lower end of the water tank, a pressure meter, a pressure switch and an exhaust valve are arranged at the upper part of the water tank, the water tank is fixedly arranged on a trolley which is provided with a charging power supply and a pressurizing pump, and the pressurizing pump is connected with the water tank through the pressure switch to pressurize water in the water tank through the 12V charging power supply. The device provided by the utility model is suitable for various detection occasions, particularly places which lacks power supplies and are far from water sources. The device can automatically feed water at a constant pressure and realizes automatic control of TOFD and ultrasonic water coupling, so that the work efficiency is greatly improved and the quantity of workers is reduced.

20 Jun 2014TL;DR: This article is based on the correlation of FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) to study the ultrasonic TOFD image registration algorithm and according to the principle of template matching algorithm, the process is simple and the registration locations are accurate, so that the detected images are clear and defected features are obvious.
Abstract: This article is based on the correlation of FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) to study the ultrasonic TOFD(Time Of Flight Diffraction) image registration algorithm and according to the principle of template matching algorithm, the process is simple and the registration locations are accurate, so that the detected images are clear and defected features are obvious. The subsequent sub-pixel image registration algorithm of TOFD will improve registration accuracy to sub-pixel level, to further perfect the TOFD image registration algorithms, more conducive to subsequent image processing.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared test results by applying radiographic testing and TOFD technique to a mock-up specimen incruding the flaws in welding parts of pressure vessel and structures.
Abstract: In order to detect the internal defects which occur in welding parts of pressure vessel and structures, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing is applied However, because of the risks of radiation exposure and film processing, radiographic testing takes a relatively long time to verify the test results and it has affected in the production process Typically, the manual ultrasonic testing is not easy to reproduce the result and it is highly dependent on the tester's skills The TOFD technique, one of the automatic ultrasonic testings is spreading alternatively This research describes the comparing test results by applying radiographic testing and TOFD technique to a mock-up specimen incruding the flaws The TOFD technique will contribute to improve the objective reliability of the ultrasonic technique
