TL;DR: In this article, a system for ultrasound inspection of materials by TOFD technique (time of flight diffraction technique) implemented on a digital ultrasonic crack detector is described. But this system is limited to the detection of cracks.
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for ultrasound inspection of materials by TOFD technique ( time of flight diffraction technique) implemented on a digital ultrasonic crack detector. According to the invention, the system comprises a digital crack detector (1), an adapter with microcontroller (2) connected, while scanning a piece (5), both to the crack detector (1) and to a scanning system (4) comprising in its turn two sliding carriages (7) movable on a guideway (11) and which support two ultrasonic transducers (6) mounted in opposition and fixed in some frames (8) linked by a cardanic articulation to the sliding carriages (7), an encoder (9) which is coupled to a wheel (10) contacting the surface of the piece (5) to be examined and which measures the distance travelled by the scanner on the piece (5), after finishing the scanning, the adapter being connected to a computing system (3) provided with a software which takes over the data resulting from the ultrasound inspection and processes them in order to generate an ultrasound image characteristic to TOFD technique.

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of both the "gradient" and the "curvature" polar scan is introduced and illustrated for several carbon reinforced composites, and the amplitude and the TOFD recorded experiments suggest that both methods are complementary.
Abstract: In this paper, the concept of both the 'gradient' and the 'curvature' polar scan is introduced and illustrated for several carbon reinforced composites. While the conventional polar scan concerns the recording of the reflected or transmitted maximum amplitudes or TOFD values for a certain solid angle, here the differences between subsequent scan angles are considered. The quality of a polar scan experiment improves significantly, i.e. more defined and more detailed polar contours are obtained. Even more, several polar contours show up which were hidden in the conventional polar scan experiment. The amplitude and the TOFD recorded experiments suggest that both methods are complementary. For future quantitative modelling, i.e. to extract the elasticity constants Cij of the targeted material, this newly obtained technique can be of great importance.

Abstract: The characteristics of ultrasonic testing of the pressure vessels in use are outlined, and the essentials of ultrasonic examination of some typical vessels are presented, such as heat exchangers, coke drum, spherical tank, pipeline and hydrogenation reaction chamber and so on. Finally, ultrasonic time-of-flight diffraction(TOFD) technique is introduced.

TL;DR: In this article, a combination of TOFD and Pulse-Echo techniques allow conformance to AMSE Code Case 2235, which allows rapid detection of flaws, precise sizing capabilities and a safe and economical replacement for radiography and manual ultrasonic.
Abstract: A rapid detection technique has been developed using a computerized ultrasonic system with a multi-probe array. The technique allows rapid detection of flaws, precise sizing capabilities and a safe and economical replacement for radiography and manual ultrasonic. This combination of TOFD and Pulse-Echo techniques allow conformance to AMSE Code Case 2235. Examples of 4 significantly different projects carried out in Brazil will be provided.
