Abstract: Titanium materials are ideal targets for selective laser melting (SLM), because they are expensive and difficult to machinery using traditional technologies. After briefly introducing the SLM process and processing factors involved, this paper reviews the recent progresses in SLM of titanium alloys and their composites for biomedical applications, especially developing new titanium powder for SLM. Although the current feedstock titanium powder for SLM is limited to CP-Ti, Ti–6Al–4V, and Ti–6Al–7Nb, this review extends attractive progresses in the SLM of all types of titanium, composites, and porous structures including Ti–24Nb–4Zr–8Sn and Ti–TiB/TiC composites with focus on the manufacture by SLM and resulting unique microstructure and properties (mechanical, wear/corrosion resistance properties).

Abstract: The combustion synthesis of titanium carbide from elemental powders has been theoretically and experimentally studied as a model system for self -propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) of refractory compounds. Calculations of the adiabatic temperature of combustion of graphite and titanium powders to form TiC x have been made to show the effects of stoichiometry, dilution and the initial temperature of the reactants. Experimental observations on the stability of the combustion front, combined with theoretical predictions, lead to an estimated activation energy of ≤ 117 kJ mol−1 for the process. This value is at least a factor of about four too low to correspond to a diffusion-controlled process. The combustion of graphite and titanium powders was accompanied by the evolution of gases whose primary constituent was found to be hydrogen. This observation was attributed to the reaction of adsorbed moisture with titanium powder. The titanium carbide phase resulting from the combustion of compacted mixed powders of the elements was highly porous (∼ 50% porosity). It can be obtained in high density (∼5% porosity) when pressure is applied during the combustion process.

Abstract: A surface modification method by electrical discharge machining (EDM) with a green compact electrode has been studied to make thick TiC or WC layer. Titanium alloy powder or tungsten powder is supplied from the green compact electrode and adheres on a workpiece by the heat caused by discharge. To avoid the production process of the green compact electrode, a surface modification method by EDM with powder suspended in working fluid is proposed in this paper. After considering flow of working fluid in EDM process, the use of a thin electrode and a rotating disk electrode are expected to keep powder concentration high in the gap between a workpiece and an electrode and to accrete powder material on the workpiece. The accretion machining is tried under various electrical conditions. Titanium powder is suspended in working oil like kerosene. TiC layer grows a thickness of 150 μm with a hardness of 1600 Hv on carbon steel with an electrode of 1 mm in diameter. When a disk placed near a plate rotates in viscous fluid, the disk drags the fluid into the gap between the disk and the plate. Therefore, the powder concentration in the gap between a workpiece and a rotational disk electrode can be kept high. A wider area of the accretion can be obtained by using the rotational electrode with a gear shape.
