TL;DR: A novel physiological approach is proposed, which could avoid artifacts occurred in most existing algorithms and performs with a low computational complexity and a limited number of parameters and obtains high-quality HDR results.
Abstract: The development of high dynamic range (HDR) display arouses the research of inverse tone mapping methods, which expand dynamic range of the low dynamic range (LDR) image to match that of HDR monitor. This paper proposed a novel physiological approach, which could avoid artifacts occurred in most existing algorithms. Inspired by the property of the human visual system (HVS), this dynamic range expansion scheme performs with a low computational complexity and a limited number of parameters and obtains high-quality HDR results. Comparisons with three recent algorithms in the literature also show that the proposed method reveals more important image details and produces less contrast loss and distortion.

TL;DR: This paper proposes in this paper a precise description of the method and an analysis of its main limitation, an out-of-range artifact.
Abstract: Exposure Fusion is a high dynamic range imaging technique to fuse a bracketed exposure sequence into a high quality image, introduced in 2009 by Mertens et al. Contrarily to most HDR imaging methods, exposure fusion does not construct an intermediate HDR image but directly constructs the final LDR one by seamlessly fusing the best regions of the input sequence, using the Laplacian pyramid. Since its publication, this method received considerable attention, being both effective and efficient. We propose in this paper a precise description of the method and an analysis of its main limitation, an out-of-range artifact. Source Code The source code, the code documentation, and the online demo are accessible at the web page of this article1. It uses the Matlab implementation provided by T. Mertens2, merely adapted for its execution with Octave on the IPOL platform.

01 Jan 2007TL;DR: The new multi-curve method uses tone mapping curves that are adaptive to local luminance levels that has the computational simplicity of curve based tone mapping methods and achieves results comparable to spatial operator methods.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel method for tone mapping high dynamic range images and videos for display in conventional low dynamic range devices. The new multi-curve method uses tone mapping curves that are adaptive to local luminance levels. The new method has the computational simplicity of curve based tone mapping methods and achieves results comparable to spatial operator methods. When applying the operator to render high dynamic range video, we introduce a bilateral style temporal filtering which successfully avoids undesirable shot noise and ghosting effects. It is also shown that our HDR tone mapping operator is a useful image enhancement method for standard format (8 bits/pixel) images. (7 pages)

TL;DR: In this article, a rapid tone mapping system and method based on multi-scale Gauss filters is proposed, which is suitable for mobile phones and can be used for tone mapping.
Abstract: The invention relates to a rapid tone mapping system and method based on multi-scale Gauss filters The system comprises a multi-scale decomposition module, a rough layer module, a detail layer module, a fusion module, a chroma processing module, a gamma correction module and a terminal display module The multi-scale Gauss filters are used to decompose images of high dynamic range to obtain rough images and detail images; the fusion module combines the rough images with the detail images linearly to form novel images of low dynamic range; the chroma processing module compensates chroma information; and the gamma correction module uses gamma correction to compensate the nonlinear relation between input signals and output signals of a display system in advance According to the invention, the image of high dynamic range can be effectively compressed, image information is effectively reserved, the algorithm efficiency is high, consumption time is short, and the tone mapping system and method are suitable for mobile phones

15 Nov 2018TL;DR: In this paper, a tone mapping engine is used to produce tone maps for simultaneous display of standard and high dynamic range content and to accommodate transitions between standard and HDR content, based on factors such as ambient light level, user brightness setting, content statistics and display characteristics.
Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display. Standard and high dynamic range content may be produced by content generators operating on control circuitry. In a first mode of operation, standard dynamic range content is displayed. In a second mode of operation, high dynamic range content is displayed. In a third mode of operation, standard dynamic range content and high dynamic range content are simultaneously displayed. Tone mapping parameters may be produced by a tone mapping engine for use in displaying the standard and high dynamic range content. The tone mapping parameters may be selected based on factors such as ambient light level, user brightness setting, content statistics, and display characteristics. Tone mapping parameters may be selected to accommodate simultaneous display of standard and high dynamic range content and to accommodate transitions between standard and high dynamic range content.
