Abstract: Hybrid power systems continuously deliver power to the load from several renewable energy sources. For such systems, the use of a multiple-input converter (MIC) has the advantage of simpler circuit structure and lower cost, compared to the use of several single-input converters. By decomposing converters into basic cells, namely, pulsating source cells and output filters, a set of basic rules for generating multiple-input converter topologies is proposed. Specifically, two families of multiple-input converters are systematically generated. In the first family of MICs, all the input sources can power the load simultaneously or individually. In the second family, only one power source is allowed to transfer energy to the load at a time. Furthermore, some isolated MICs are simplified for reducing the complexity of the circuit configuration.

Abstract: This paper presents a resonant boost topology suitable for very-high-frequency (VHF, 30-300 MHz) DC-DC power conversion. The proposed design features low device voltage stress, high efficiency over a wide load range, and excellent transient performance. Two experimental prototypes have been built and evaluated. One is a 110-MHz, 23-W converter that uses a high-performance RF lateral DMOSFET. The converter achieves higher than 87% efficiency at nominal input and output voltages, and maintains good efficiency down to 5% of full load. The second implementation, aimed toward integration, is a 50-MHz, 17-W converter that uses a transistor from a 50-V integrated power process. In addition, two resonant gate drive schemes suitable for VHF operation are presented, both of which provide rapid startup and low-loss operation. Both converters regulate the output using high-bandwidth, on-off hysteretic control, which enables fast transient response and efficient light-load operation. The low energy storage requirements of the converters allow the use of aircore inductors in both designs, thereby eliminating magnetic core loss and introducing the possibility of easy integration.

Abstract: A methodology for the automatic design optimization of analog integrated circuits is presented. A non-fixed-topology approach is realized by combining the optimization program OPTIMAN with the symbolic simulator ISAAC. After selecting a circuit topology, the user invokes ISAAC to model the circuit. ISAAC generates both exact and simplified analytic expressions, describing the circuit's behavior. The model is then passed to the design optimization program OPTIMAN. This program is based on a generalized formulation of the analog design problem. For the selected topology, the independent design variables are automatically extracted and OPTIMAN sizes all elements to satisfy the performance constraints, thereby optimizing a user-defined design objective. The global optimization method used on the analytic circuit models is simulated annealing. Practical examples show that OPTIMAN quickly designs analog circuits, closely meeting the specifications, and that it is a flexible and reliable design and exploration tool. >

Abstract: A nonlinear projection method is presented to visualize high-dimensional data as a 2D image. The proposed method is based on the topology preserving mapping algorithm of Kohonen. The topology preserving mapping algorithm is used to train a 2D network structure. Then the interpoint distances in the feature space between the units in the network are graphically displayed to show the underlying structure of the data. Furthermore, we present and discuss a new method to quantify how well a topology preserving mapping algorithm maps the high-dimensional input data onto the network structure. This is used to compare our projection method with a well-known method of Sammon (1969). Experiments indicate that the performance of the Kohonen projection method is comparable or better than Sammon's method for the purpose of classifying clustered data. Its time-complexity only depends on the resolution of the output image, and not on the size of the dataset. A disadvantage, however, is the large amount of CPU time required. >
