TL;DR: In this article, the role of soil organic matter was highlighted by particle size fractionation combined with density fractionation, and experiments were carried out on both control and sludge-treated soil samples coming from a field trial on a crusting loamy soil 12 years after the end of sewage sludge application.
Abstract: Fractionation methods including physical rather than chemical dispersion were applied to soil samples in order to study interactions between soil constituents and trace metals. In particular, the role of soil organic matter was highlighted by particle size fractionation combined with density fractionation. In order to take into account the trace metal background content, experiments were carried out on both control and sludge-treated soil samples coming from a field trial on a crusting loamy soil 12 years after the end of sewage sludge application. Comparison of trace metal distributions between these two samples permitted a speciation approach. The collected samples were separated into eight particle size fractions, and the most abundant fraction in mass among coarser fractions, the 50–100 µm fraction, was also separated by flotation on water into two density fractions. Total chemical analyses of all these fractions were performed for major elements and Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. In both field trial plots, retention of trace metals was found not only in the finest fractions ( 50 µm). The organic carbon contents in the particle size fractions followed the same trends, but different organic C distributions between the two experimental treatments were observed. The light isolated samples after density separation had high organic C contents, and in sludge-treated plots their trace metal contents were higher than in any other bulk particle size fractions. In control plots, however, they were also abnormally high. These facts are discussed, and a simple test is proposed to define soil pollution status.

TL;DR: In this paper, the synoptical relations in spatial distributions with respect to environmental conditions such as pH, organic carbon, and sediment texture were inter-correlated, which reflected their similarity in distribution rather than anthropogenic enrichment.
Abstract: Surficial and core samples collected from the sedimentary microenvironments of Lakshadweep Archipelago were analysed for their trace metal contents. The synoptical relations in spatial distributions with respect to environmental conditions such as pH, organic carbon and sediment texture were inter-correlated. Some of the metals exhibited good correlations with Fe/Mn, which reflect their similarity in distribution rather than anthropogenic enrichment. Inter-relating the variations in metal—pH relationships with metal—organic carbon, in general, those which exhibited positive correlations with pH, displayed negative interactions with organic carbon content and vice versa. Comparatively, higher values of Fe in the mangrove area of one of the islands highlight the possibility of precipitation of Fe as iron sulphides, which are common in mangrove ecosystem. Based on the contamination factors for Pb, Zn and Cd, as well as the geo-accumulation index of Cd, it can be generalised that some of the islands remain polluted with respect to these elements. An evaluation based on pollution load index shows that none of the islands surveyed for this study posed a serious threat in trace metal pollution. Bray Curtis similarity index was computed to find out the similarity among metals/islands, using non-transformed data of metal concentrations. Group linkage clustering technique was used for drawing dendrograms to show the similarity among them.

TL;DR: In this article, size-resolved trace metal concentrations of 15 elements in aerosol particles at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO) under remote background conditions were investigated through analysis of aerosol samples collected during intensive field studies from January 2007 to November 2011 using total reflection x-ray fluorescence (TXRF).
Abstract: . Size-resolved trace metal concentrations of 15 elements in aerosol particles at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO) under remote background conditions were investigated through analysis of aerosol samples collected during intensive field studies from January 2007 to November 2011 using total reflection x-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The identification of the main air mass origin that influence remote marine aerosol in the northern tropical Atlantic has been investigated. In total, 317 samples were collected. The dataset was analyzed according to the main air mass inflow at the station. We found that remote conditions make up about 45% of the meteorological conditions in a year at CVAO and thus the northern tropical Atlantic. Surprisingly, air masses from North America are often responsible for higher trace metal concentrations in this region. Elements such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, and V were mostly found in the submicron size fractions, while elements with dominant crustal or oceanic origin such as Fe, Ti, Mn, Sr, and Rb were found in the coarse fractions (>1 μm). The highest metal concentrations, especially for Zn (3.23 ng m−3), Cu (0.81 ng m−3), Sr (2.63 ng m−3), and Cr (0.53 ng m−3), were observed in air masses originating from North America and the concentrations were within the same concentration range to those reported previously in the literature for remote marine aerosols. Fe (12.26 ng m−3), Ti (0.91 ng m−3), and Mn (0.35 ng m−3) showed higher concentrations when air mass came from Europe and the Canary Islands. Pb concentration was low ( 20) for Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, and Se. The observed enrichment of the elements was attributed to crustal, marine, anthropogenic, and biogenic sources, as well as long-range transport and resuspension. Zn, Cu and Pb were indicators of anthropogenic activities, while Ti and Sr were indicators of crustal and marine origin, respectively. Oceanic and biogenic emissions might have contributed to most of the Se observed. This work provides the first long-term size-resolved trace metals study for remote tropical northern Atlantic marine aerosols and the dataset could serve as good initiation of yearly flux estimates.
