TL;DR: In this paper, the authors theoretically show that under specific conditions anisotropic metamaterial slabs can emulate Pendry's perfect-lens phenomenon on a plane, and they demonstrate that it is possible to attain far-field superfocusing with a metammaterial slab as thin as half the free-space wavelength.
Abstract: Pendry's perfect lens has spurred intense interest for its practical realization at visible frequencies. However, fabrication of low-loss isotropic left-handed metamaterials is a current challenge. In this work, we theoretically show that under specific conditions anisotropic metamaterial slabs can emulate Pendry's perfect-lens phenomenon on a plane. Geometric optics leads to a new lens formula for this special anisotropic metamaterial superlens, which allows significant shrinkage of the metamaterial slab thickness for a certain range of far-field operation. Conversely, such anisotropic metamaterial superlens with the same thickness as its isotropic analog can operate for much larger distances between object and lens. We present numerical simulations which confirm our theoretical calculations. In particular, we find subdiffraction focusing that rivals the perfect isotropic negative-index metamaterial lens performance and obeys the new lens formula as predicted. In addition, we demonstrate that it is possible to attain far-field superfocusing with a metamaterial slab as thin as half the free-space wavelength. We believe this work will inspire new anisotropic metamaterial designs and opens a promising route for the realization of compact far-field superlenses in the visible regime.

TL;DR: The cubic-cell transmission line host network is a physical realization of the 3D distributed node TLM lattice which has the same low-frequency properties as the FDTD Yee scheme as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: We propose a new topology for realizing artificial microwave materials that exhibit a negative refractive index over a wide frequency band. These metamaterials consist of a three-dimensional transmission line mesh that is loaded with reactive series and shunt elements to create negative permittivity and permeability. The cubic-cell transmission line host network is a physical realization of the 3D distributed node TLM lattice which has the same low-frequency properties as the FDTD Yee scheme. This paper describes the topology, the theory, the design, and possible realizations of such a metamaterial. Its wave properties are validated by full-wave simulations using the time domain electromagnetic field simulation tool MEFiSTo-3D Pro.

TL;DR: In this paper, a single-atom-layered material can serve as a platform for infrared metamaterials and transformation optical devices, including edge waveguides, bent ribbon-like paths guiding light, photonic splitters and combiners.
Abstract: Here we theoretically show, by designing and manipulating spatially inhomogeneous, non-uniform conductivity patterns across a single flake of graphene, that this single-atom-layered material can serve as a "one-atom-thick" platform for infrared metamaterials and transformation optical devices. It is known that by varying the chemical potential using gate electric and/or magnetic fields, the graphene conductivity in the THz and IR frequencies can be changed. This versatility provides the possibility that different "patches" on a single flake of graphene possess different conductivities, suggesting a mechanism to construct "single-atom-thick" IR metamaterials and transformation optical structures. Our computer simulation results pave the way for envisioning numerous IR photonic functions and metamaterial concepts-all on a "one-atom-thick" platform-of such we list a few here: edge waveguides, bent ribbon-like paths guiding light, photonic splitters and combiners, "one-atom-thick" IR scattering elements as building blocks for "flatland" metamaterials, thin strips as flatland superlenses, and "one-atom-thick" subwavelength IR lenses as tools for Fourier and transformation optics.

TL;DR: By incorporating the conducting layer developed in the present paper right between the cloaked region and the cloaking region, arbitrary electromagnetic contents can be nearly cloaked.
Abstract: The approximate cloaking is investigated for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations via the approach of transformation optics. The problem is reduced to certain boundary effect estimates due to an inhomogeneous electromagnetic inclusion with an asymptotically small support but an arbitrary content enclosed by a thin high-conducting layer. Sharp estimates are established in terms of the asymptotic parameter, which are independent of the material tensors of the small electromagnetic inclusion. The result implies that the “blow-up-a-small-region” construction via the transformation optics approach yields a near-cloak for the electromagnetic waves. A novelty lies in the fact that the geometry of the cloaking construction of this work can be very general. Moreover, by incorporating the conducting layer developed in the present paper right between the cloaked region and the cloaking region, arbitrary electromagnetic contents can be nearly cloaked. Our mathematical technique extends the general one developed in [H. Y...

TL;DR: This work demonstrates the feasibility of a LH metamaterial composed of only cut wires and uses Finite Element Method based simulations and microwave experiments to investigate the material properties of the structure.
Abstract: We present, design and analyze a novel planar Left-Handed (LH) metamaterial at microwave frequencies. This metamaterial is composed of only metallic cut wires and is used under normal-to-plane incidence. Using Finite Element Method (FEM) based simulations and microwave experiments, we have investigated the material properties of the structure. Simultaneous negative values are observed for the permittivity epsilon and permeability mu by the inversion method from the transmission and reflection responses. A negative index n is verified in a bulk prism engineered by stacking several layers of the metamaterial. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of a LH metamaterial composed of only cut wires.
