Abstract: A growing body of leadership literature focuses on leader and follower identity dynamics, levels, processes of development and outcomes Despite the importance of the phenomena, there has been surprisingly little effort to systematically review the widely dispersed literature on leader and follower identity In this review we map existing studies on a multilevel framework that integrates levels-of-the self (individual, relational and collective) with the levels-of-analysis (intrapersonal, interpersonal and group) on which leader or follower identity work takes place We also synthesize work from multiple research paradigms, such as social psychology experimental studies, narrative accounts of leaders' identity work and field studies on antecedents, outcomes, mediating mechanisms and boundary conditions Finally, we outline implications for leadership development and call attention to key themes we see ripe for future research

TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted a study to test the notion that transformational leadership style is more effective than transactional leadership style by fostering employee well-being (enhancing quality of work life and life satisfaction as well as increasing organizational commitment and decreasing employee burnout).

TL;DR: The results of this study clearly support the basis for a relationship between transformational leadership, organizational position, and knowledge management.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this research report is to empirically explore the relationship between transformational leadership, organizational position, and knowledge management.Design/methodology/approach – Adult subjects (n=1,046) were asked to complete a survey battery consisting of questions about their leadership abilities, organizational position, and knowledge management behaviors.Findings – Knowledge management behaviors were significantly predicted by transformational leadership accounting for 19.5 percent of the variance. Organizational position was a significant predictor of knowledge management and, with transformational leadership, accounted for 21.1 percent of the variance of knowledge management.Research limitations/implications – Future research needs to more clearly focus on the specific aspects of transformational leadership, position, and knowledge management in a variety of contexts, but the results of this study clearly support the basis for a relationship between these variables. TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the motivational effects of charismatic leadership and found that the behaviors of a charismatic leader and the enhanced followers' needs promote clearer role perceptions, improved task performance, greater job satisfaction, stronger collective identity and group cohesiveness, more organization citizenship behaviors, and stronger self-leadership among the followers.
Abstract: The motivational effects of charismatic leadership are examined in greater detail. Charismatic leadership is assumed to have three core components: envisioning, empathy, and empowerment. A charismatic leader's envisioning behavior influences followers' need for achievement, and the leader's empathic behavior stimulates followers' need for affiliation. Followers' need for power is enhanced by a charismatic leader's empowerment practices. It is further suggested that the behaviors of a charismatic leader and the enhanced followers' needs promote clearer role perceptions, improved task performance, greater job satisfaction, stronger collective identity and group cohesiveness, more organization citizenship behaviors, and stronger self-leadership among the followers. The contextual factors which may influence the motivational effects of charismatic leadership are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a causal model of the influence of educational leadership on intervening and outcome variables is presented. But the results show no direct or indirect effects of educational leaders on student commitment; instead, a reciprocal relationship was found between student commitment and strategic leadership.
Abstract: This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the antecedents and effects of educational leadership, and of the influence of the principal's leadership on intervening and outcome variables. A path analysis was conducted to test and validate a causal model. The results show no direct or indirect effects of educational leadership on student commitment; instead a reciprocal relationship was found between student commitment and strategic leadership. A range of antecedent variables appears to have more effects on the school culture than educational leadership has. Finally, the principal's vision has a substantial impact on his or her educational leadership behaviours. The findings suggest the importance of cognitive processes in order to understand the complex chain of variables through which principals have an impact on school effectiveness and school improvement. The results also underline the importance of conceptualizing leadership from a contingency approach.
