Abstract: In principle, multiple-echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to estimate the spin-spin relaxation time, T2, which can then be used for quantitative tissue characterization. Although multiple echoes can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in an image, by echo addition, rf pulse imperfections modify the echo amplitudes resulting in significant errors in the estimate of T2. Imperfect 180 degree pulses do not completely invert the transverse magnetization so that the magnitude of the transverse component is reduced and a longitudinal component is generated. Successive application of such imperfect pulses generates many components that interact in a complex manner. The amplitudes of successive echoes are affected whenever the transverse components refocus, whereas the longitudinal components may be rotated into the transverse plane by subsequent pulses and may often add to the image signal or give rise to an image artifact. These effects have been analyzed theoretically and have been demonstrated for a wide range of rf pulse imperfections using both simple and composite pulses, through computer simulations based on the numerical solution of the Bloch equations. The theoretical and simulation results have been substantiated through experiments performed on a mineral oil phantom using a resistive prototype MR scanner operating at 6.35 MHz. In this paper we report the effects of improper pulse amplitude or duration for nonselective rf pulses on resonance. We separately describe the other types of imperfections caused by off-resonance effects and the use of selective pulses.

Abstract: Two new analytical methods have been developed that can predict the stress transfer between the 0 and 90° plies in a 0°—90°—0° cross-ply laminate containing transverse cracks. Account is taken of thermal residual stresses arising from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients of the 0 and 90° plies. The first method is based on a 2-D model which assumes that generalised plane strain conditions prevail. The theoretical approach retains all relevant stress and displacement components, and satisfies exactly the equilibrium equations, the interface conditions, and other boundary conditions involving stresses. The stress—strain—temperature relations are satisfied either exactly or in an average sense. The 2-D representation can be used to predict the stress and displacement fields for a laminate containing parallel transverse cracks. In this paper the solutions are used to estimate the dependence of the longitudinal values of Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient on the density of transverse cracks. The second analytical method extends the 2-D model so that it can apply to 3-D problems which arise, for example, when edge effects or orthogonal cracking are to be taken into account. For the special case of very large laminate widths the 2- and 3-D models predict results which are very close to each other for both glass fibre/epoxy and carbon fibre/epoxy laminates. It is shown how the 3-D model can be used to predict the transverse Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient. Theoretical predictions of the dependence of Poisson's ratio on transverse crack density indicate that experimental measurements can be sensitive to the strain measurement technique used, and to specimen width when using a transverse extensometer. Theoretical predictions, for glass fibre/epoxy and carbon fibre/epoxy laminates, of the dependence of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio on the crack density are compared with some experimental results.

Abstract: We report long-range self-channeling in air of multiterawatt femtosecond laser pulses with large negative initial chirps. The peak intensity in the light channels is at least one order of magnitude lower than required for multiphoton ionization of air molecules. A detailed comparison is made between experiments and realistic 3+1-dimensional numerical simulations. It reveals that the mechanism limiting the growth of intensity by filamentation is connected with broken revolution symmetry in the transverse diffraction plane.
