TL;DR: The experimental result clearly shows that the observed transverse dust-lattice wave propagates as a backward wave, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.
Abstract: Externally driven, vertically polarized transverse dust-lattice waves were observed in a one-dimensional strongly coupled dust chain levitated in the plasma-sheath boundary of a dc argon plasma at low gas pressure around 5 mtorr. Real and imaginary parts of the complex wave number were measured in the experiments. The experimental result clearly shows that the observed transverse dust-lattice wave propagates as a backward wave, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory for the oscillating two-stream instability, in which the heating of the electrons constitutes the nonlinearity, is developed for an inhomogeneous and magnetized plasma.
Abstract: A theory for the oscillating two‐stream instability, in which the Ohmic heating of the electrons constitutes the nonlinearity, is developed for an inhomogeneous and magnetized plasma Its possible role in explaining short‐scale, field‐aligned irregularities observed in ionospheric heating experiments is emphasized The theory predicts that the initial growth of such irregularities is centered around the level of upper hybrid resonance Furthermore, plane disturbances nearly parallel to the magnetic meridian plane have the largest growth rates Expressions for threshold, growth rate, and transverse scale of maximum growth are obtained Special attention is paid to the transport theory, since the physical picture depends heavily on the kind of electron collisions which dominate This is due to the velocity dependence of collison frequencies, which gives rise to the thermal forces

TL;DR: In this paper, a pair of equal-sized circular cylinders of low nondimensional mass (m * = 10 ) in a tandem arrangement were analyzed for flow-induced vibrations in two dimensions, where the structural damping was set to zero for enabling maximum amplitudes of oscillation.

TL;DR: From the calculated pupil plane distribution, a simplified discrete complex pupil filter can be designed and significant improvements over the previously reported complex filters are clearly demonstrated.
Abstract: We report a new method to create high purity longitudinally polarized field with extremely long depth of focus in the focal volume of a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through reversing the radiated field from an electric dipole array situated near the focus of the high-NA lens, the required incident field distribution in the pupil plane for the creation of an ultra-long optical needle field can be found. Numerical examples demonstrate that an optical needle field with a depth of focus up to 8λ is obtainable. Throughout the depth of focus, this engineered focal field maintains a diffraction limited transverse spot size (<0.43λ) with high longitudinal polarization purity. From the calculated pupil plane distribution, a simplified discrete complex pupil filter can be designed and significant improvements over the previously reported complex filters are clearly demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible cantilever in a fluid flow were investigated and good agreement was found between the response amplitude and frequency for two identical cantilevers, one set up by Pesce and Fujarra, where strain is measured to infer the body dynamics, and the other arrangement by Flemming and Williamson, where the tip motion is measured using optical techniques.
