Abstract: Longitudinal and transverse shifts of an 8 cm parallel bounded beam of 34.2 GHz (8.77 mm) microwaves totally reflected from a paraffin prism have been investigated. The 45°–45°–90° prism is 18 cm high by 25 cm on the sides and the index of refraction is 1.491. Longitudinal shifts as large as 3 cm have been measured in a single reflection near the critical angle for a beam linearly polarized in the plane of incidence. The shift for perpendicular polarization is approximately half this value. The results are in general agreement with the classical theory for the Goos-Hanchen effect. An incident beam polarized at 45° to the incidence plane produces both parallel and perpendicular polarization shifts with values similar to the above. The shifts for both polarizations are reduced but are still distinctly separate if either a second prism or a metallic reflector is brought into the evanescent wave at millimeter distances from the interface. These results are in accordance with stationary phase calculations for two interfaces. It is found that a small (6 mm) transverse shift results if the prism is illuminated with circularly polarized microwaves.

Abstract: Errors in kinematic data are referred to as noise and are an undesirable portion of any waveform. Noise is typically removed using a low-pass filter which removes the high frequency components of the signal. The selection of an optimal frequency cut-off is very important when processing kinematic information and a number of techniques exists for the determination of an optimal frequency cut-off. Despite the importance of cut-off frequency to the efficacy of kinematic analyses there is currently a paucity of research examining the influence of different cut-off frequencies on the resultant 3-D kinematic waveforms and discrete parameters. Twenty participants ran at 4.0 m•s−1 as lower extremity kinematics in the sagittal, coronal and transverse planes were measured using an eight camera motion analysis system. The data were filtered at a range of cut-off frequencies and the discrete kinematic parameters were examined using repeated measures ANOVA’s. The similarity between the raw and filtered waveforms were examined using intra-class correlations. The results show that the cut-off frequency has a significant influence on the discrete kinematic measure across displacement and derivative information in all three planes of rotation. Furthermore, it was also revealed that as the cut-off frequency decreased the attenuation of the kinematic waveforms became more pronounced, particularly in the coronal and transverse planes at the second derivative. In conclusion, this investigation provides new information regarding the influence of digital filtering on lower extremity kinematics and re-emphasizes the importance of selecting the correct cut-off frequency.

Abstract: The goal of this investigation is to further develop nonlinear modal numerical simulation methods for application to geometrically nonlinear response of structures with shallow curvature under random loadings. For reduced order analysis, the modal basis selection must be capable of reflecting the coupling in both the linear and nonlinear stiffness. For the symmetric shallow arch under consideration, four categories of modal basis functions are defined. Those having symmetric transverse displacements (ST modes) can be designated as transverse dominated (ST-T) modes and in-plane dominated (ST-I) modes. Those having anti-symmetric transverse displacements (AT modes) can similarly be designated as transverse dominated (AT-T) modes and in-plane dominated (AT-I) modes. The response of an aluminum arch under a uniformly distributed transverse random loading is investigated. Results from nonlinear modal simulations made using various modal bases are compared with those obtained from a numerical simulation in physical degrees-of-freedom. While inclusion of ST-T modes is important for all response regimes, it is found that the ST-I modes become increasingly important in the nonlinear response regime, and that AT-T and AT-I modes are critical in the autoparametric regime.

Abstract: The transversal crossing of ultrasound beams by moving scatterers is studied to derive a process dedicated to transverse motion estimation. A 3D blood flow model is formulated, allowing the test of various correlation algorithms to detect motion completely. Time correlation techniques giving axial displacement can be extended to transverse directions to detect 3D motion. The principle of a multiple probe is defined, and the implementation of the associated processing is demonstrated. It relies mainly on the time domain correlation processor used for axial detection, working also for transverse components. The complexity of this process is about five times that of the axial correlation processor. Feasibility of measuring this preliminary study indicates the complete velocity vector of blood flow with this approach. >
