Abstract: The biological potential of different microbial antagonists viz., Bacillus thuringiensis, Rhizobium meliloti, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma harzianum was examined by coating the seeds with gum arabic, glucose, sugar and mollases in the suppression of root rot fungi viz., Macrophomina phaseolina, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium spp., on okra and sunflower plants. All biocontrol agents enhanced the germination and growth of plant as compared to control. Shoot length, shoot weight, root length, root weight were significantly increased in both okra and sunflower. Maximum plant height was observed where seeds of okra and sunflower were coated with T. harzianum using 2% of glucose followed by gum arabic, mollases and sugar solution. Gum arabic was found more effective in reducing infection by root rot fungi viz., M. phaseolina, R. solani and Fusarium spp. Of the different microbial antagonists used, T. harzianum was found more effective followed by B. thuringiensis, R. meliloti and A. niger in the control of root rot fungi.

Abstract: The diversity of Trichoderma (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) colonizing leaf litter as well as the rhizosphere of Garcinia macrophylla (Clusiaceae) was investigated in primary and secondary rain forests in Colombian Amazonia. DNA barcoding of 107 strains based on the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS1 and 2) of the ribosomal RNA gene cluster and the partial sequence of the translation elongation factor 1 alpha (tef1) gene revealed that the diversity of Trichoderma was dominated (71 %) by three common cosmopolitan species, namely Trichoderma harzianum sensu lato (41 %), Trichoderma spirale (17 %) and Trichoderma koningiopsis (13 %). Four ITS 1 and 2 phylotypes (13 strains) could not be identified with certainty. Multigene phylogenetic analysis and phenotype profiling of four strains with an ITS1 and 2 phylotype similar to Trichoderma strigosum revealed a new sister species of the latter that is described here as Trichoderma strigosellum sp. nov. Sequence similarity searches revealed that this species also occurs in soils of Malaysia and Cameroon, suggesting a pantropical distribution.

Abstract: Addition of Trichoderma herzienum into organic media like neemcake, coirpith, farmyard manure and decomposed coffee pulp caused an immediate increase in the population upto 3 days. Population increase was observed at all the different proportions of initial inoculum levels tried. It also showed similar trends at different locations. Increase in the total population density of T. harzianum in the media suggests that competition by native fungi in non-sterile carrier media was not a limiting factor in colonization of the media by the antagonist. Soil amended with organic materials like neemcake, coircompost, farmyard manure and Gliricidia leaves showed better growth and survival of antagonist than in soil alone. The carrier materials like neemcake, coirpith, farmyard manure and decomposed coffee pulp serve as nutrient additives to the crop in addition to inoculum production they support.
