TL;DR: In this article, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were taken from powder specimens of cristobalite and tridymite at 9.6 GHz and temperatures between - l20"C and 300"C.
Abstract: Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were taken from powder specimens of cristobalite and tridymite at 9. l6 GHz and temperatures between - l20"C and 300"C. The spectra exhibit significant signals around g"n : 4 which arise from Fe3* ions in strong orthorhombic crystal fields. Fe3+ is assumed to substitute for Sio* in both cristobalite and tridymite. The charge deficiency produced thereby is compensated by a nearest interstitially incorporated Na+ ion. In cristobalite two crystallographically different Fe3+ centers occur which indicate a possible symmetry lowering of the space group symmetry of low cristobalite from P4,2r2 to its subgroup C222r. The broadening of the electron paramagnetic resonance signals in tridymite is associated with a certain number of Fe3+ centers differing so slightly that their particular signals cannot be resolved.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a structurally dense silica brick having excellent heat conductivity, pressure resistance and wear resistance at high temp., prolonging the service life of the body of a furnace and capable of saving the energy. CONSTITUTION:This dense silica brick has a compsn. contg. cristobalite and tridymite subjected to transition as crystal phases in (10-40):(90-60) ratio (wt.%) and 2-12wt.% metal oxide other than SiO2 and existing as an amorphous phase and has >=1.95 bulk density and <=15% porosity. When colloidal silica is impregnated into this silica brick, a denser silica brick having higher wear resistance is obtd.
