Abstract: The effects of the constituent sesquiterpene glycosides 1-3 and polyhydroxylated triterpenoids 5-6 isolated by MeOH extraction of Eriobotrya japonica were studied in genetically diabetic mice (C57BL/KS-db/db/Ola) and normoglycemic rats. The sesquiterpene glycoside 3 and the polyhydroxylated triterpenoids 5 and 6 produced a marked inhibition of glycosuria. Furthermore, 5 and 6 were able to reduce blood glucose levels in normoglycemic rats. While there are already some data reported on hypoglycemic activity of polyhydroxylated triterpenoids, there are no previous data showing hypoglycemic activity of sesquiterpene glycosides.

Abstract: The first total synthesis of the triterpene ether teurilene has been accomplished utilizing two vanadium-(V)-catalyzed oxidation-cyclization reactions with different stereoselectivities. The synthesis involved stereoselective and step-by-step construction of 2,5-cis- and 2,5-trans-tetrahydrofuran rings, vanadium (V)-catalyzed oxidation of 4-substituted 4-en-1-ol and subsequent cyclization of the resulting anti-epoxy alcohol, and a similar oxidation-cyclization of 5-substituted 4-en-1-ol by way of syn-epoxy alcohol. An improved synthesis of 1, which featured direct formation of bis(tetrahydrofuran) from squalene derivative by simultaneous double oxidation-cyclization, was also accomplished

Abstract: Twelve pentacyclic triterpenes were isolated from the outer bark of river birch, Betula nigra. 3β-Acetoxyolean-11-oxo-12-ene-28-oic acid was isolated for the first time from a Betula species. 3β-Caffeatoxyolean-12-ene-28-oic acid has been spectrally characterized for the first time. 3β-Acetoxyolean-12-ene-28-oic acid and 3β-acetoxyolean-11-oxo-12-ene-28-oic acid have been demonstrated to be active as antifeedants for the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata.

Abstract: Eighteen novel triterpenoid saponins, named tragopogonsaponins A-R, were isolated from the roots of Tragopogon porrifolius L. (Compositae). The structures of these saponins were determined on the basis of spectral and chemical evidence. Seventeen of the saponins contained phenyl propionic acid derivative as ester moiety. Their structures were elucidated as oleananae-type triterpene saponins which have echinocystic acid as the aglycone moiety.
